The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition Is Out Now

Aspyr has announced and released The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, bringing the 2011 action RPG to modern consoles and PC with upgraded performance, quality-of-life improvements, and both online and local co-op.

The Legacy Edition is available now for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC for $19.99. A 10% launch discount is also available through August 24.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version is available now in supported regions, although Aspyr notes that it will launch on the Nintendo EU eShop on August 18.

Originally developed by Snowblind Studios, War in the North takes players away from the Fellowship’s journey and into a darker conflict unfolding elsewhere in Middle-earth. Players form their own fellowship of three heroes to confront Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron who has assembled an army in the ruins of Fornost.

The three playable heroes return with distinct combat roles: Dúnadan Ranger Eradan specializes in stealth, Elven Loremaster Andriel wields magic, and Dwarven Champion Farin serves as the group’s heavily armored fighter.

The Legacy Edition supports up to three players online alongside two-player local split-screen on supported platforms.

New Features in War in the North – Legacy Edition

One of the biggest additions is character hot-swapping, allowing players to switch between the three heroes on the fly. Players can also fully manage the equipment, skills, and abilities of computer-controlled party members.

Aspyr has made several other improvements for modern hardware, including refined enemy lock-on functionality, autosaves, additional save slots, and redesigned UI elements displaying party members’ Health, Mana, and EXP.

The game also supports 60 FPS on compatible platforms, while PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 players can use gyro and motion controls.

A new “Triggering Secrets” feature lets players discover character-specific secrets such as hidden supply caches regardless of which hero they are currently controlling.

Despite the modernizations, the core adventure remains intact, including its RPG progression, loot, skills, and appearances from familiar characters such as Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond. Players will also travel through recognizable Middle-earth locations including Rivendell, Lórien, and Mirkwood.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is available now for $19.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, with a 10% launch discount available through August 24.

Aspyr also confirmed that this is its first The Lord of the Rings release, teasing that fans can expect more classic titles from the franchise to be released by the studio in the future.
