Media outlet Gamebyte recently talked with Turtle Rock Studios Lead Game Designer Brandon Yanez about upcoming video game Back 4 Blood especially on the cards system.
Yanez revealed that the team did not want to make the same mistakes that they did with their previous game, Evolve, which is why they went back from the start to make a new progression system. They wanted to keep up with the modern trends and so they came up with the cards system, which was similar to the deckbuilder.
The purpose of this new system was to make players have their own playstyle, change it on their own, and improve on it depending on the situation. They did not want the Game Director to randomize their loot or the AI, which is why the cards system was the ideal feature.
“We loved testing different ideas,” revealed Yanez. “Using the cards to come up with different playstyles, how this card could counter the Game Director or another player and so on. And sometimes it wasn’t even for practical uses but we love cards that are just fun.”
The upcoming open beta will offer us some insight on what the Back 4 Blood cards system does for playstyle.
Back 4 Blood open beta is currently ongoing while the full game will launch on October 12, 202. It will be available on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
