Santa Monica Studio has surprised us with free content called God of War Ragnarok Valhalla DLC during The Game Awards. This love letter to the fans and players gives us a new mode that’s essentially like a roguelite where Kratos must challenge himself to a gauntlet against an onslaught of foes. Feel free to jump in yourself at any time but first you have to figure out where to start.

There’s a lot more to this new DLC content than meets the eye. Let’s get you started on playing the God of War Ragnarök Valhalla DLC.

How to Start God of War Ragnarok Valhalla

In the main menu of God of War Ragnarok, select the Valhalla option right under New Game+ to start the free DLC. You will instantly be placed into the new content. Of course, you’ll have to download it first from the PlayStation Store which is around 8 GB for both the PS5 and PS4.

Updating God of War Ragnarok won’t automatically download the Valhalla DLC on your behalf. Selecting it from the main menu without downloading the free DLC from the PlayStation Store will only take you to its store page. You can download the Valhalla DLC for free without any additional payments so long as you own a copy of God of War Ragnarök.

How to Unlock God of War Ragnarok Valhalla

    • Go to the God of War Ragnarok PlayStation Store page and download the 8 GB Valhalla DLC.
    • Update your game to the latest version.
    • Select Valhalla in the main menu.

    How to Start Valhalla DLC

You can start the God of War Valhalla DLC at any time even if you haven’t finished the main story. The new content is a completely separate experience from the actual campaign you don’t need to prepare an old save file before you can start playing.

Any weapons or progress you make will only stay in the Valhalla DLC and cannot be carried over to the main game or vice versa. You can enjoy this new game mode any time you wish from the main menu. It isn’t necessary to have witnessed God of War Ragnarok’s ending but we highly recommend it as the mode takes place after the events of the main game.

What is God of War Ragnarok Valhalla About?

God of War Ragnarok Valhalla entrance

God of War Ragnarök Valhalla is a free DLC mode that places Kratos in a roguelite gauntlet where he must battle several foes. In this DLC, Kratos goes to the titular Valhalla, a new location, and faces against the echoes of his past.

The Valhalla DLC does have its own story that centers around the history of Kratos making it a personal journey for him. The new game mode is set after the events of God of War Ragnarok. It combines the game’s combat system with roguelite elements where you’re challenged against new combinations of foes that will push you to master all of Kratos’ arsenal.

Playing through the Valhalla DLC is not without its rewards as you’re granted new cosmetic armor for Kratos to wear. However these are only for aesthetic alone as they don’t come with additional stats. If you ever find the new free game mode too hard or too easy, you can adjust between the five difficulties at any time to suit your style. Though the difficulty will affect the amount of rewards that you gain with higher difficulties yielding better rewards.

Good luck on taking on threatening new challenges in Valhalla! You’re going to need to need to need to spend some time and use everything you’ve learned to beat it.
