Under a Rebel Star is one of the new missions added into the Outlaws update in No Man’s Sky. Completing this mission will reward players with a new shroud that they can put on their travelers.

In this guide, we will go through the steps on how to complete the Under a Rebel Star Mission and get the Shroud of Freedom in No Man’s Sky.

How to Complete the Under a Rebel Star mission and Get the Shroud of Freedom in No Man’s Sky?

Under a Rebel Star is a quest line which will have you follow clues from a mysterious message broadcasted by an abandoned starship. To initiate the Under a Rebel Star mission, you must first visit a regular star system, not a pirate-controlled one.

Activate your pulse drive within a star system

While within a star system, just activate your pulse drive towards empty space and wait for a few moments.

Exit pulse drive and answer your communicator

Upon exiting your pulse drive, you will receive an emergency broadcast from a floating starship called Signal Echo. Answer your Communicator from your Quick Menu (X key, Down D-Pad) to learn more about the broadcast.

Accept the coordinates from the message

The message has already decayed, but there are still some coordinates that can be salvaged. Accept these coordinates to proceed.

Open your Galactic Map and reach the marked coordinates

Go to your Galactic Map and set a course to the star system marked with a skull. Then, follow the marker to the planet where it is at.

Use your Sweep Scanner to locate the coordinates

Once you land on the surface of the planet, you will have to locate the exact location of the coordinates by using your Sweep Scanner on your Analysis Visor (F key/L2/LT). Then, go towards the direction of where the scanner is pointing until you find a shipwreck.

Examine the Distress Beacon - Under a Rebel Star mission in No Man's Sky

    Examine the Distress Beacon

Head towards the distress beacon and examine its logs. You’ll then learn that the ship was wrecked by an overwhelming assault. Afterwards, you need to choose the Recover cockpit recording option, and then choose the Take rendezvous beacon option. Be careful as sentinel drones will be activated right after; destroying them is optional.

Activate the Rendezvous Beacon from your inventory

Check on the Rendezvous Beacon in your inventory and activate it. You will then receive another marker within the star system.

Fly to the next rendezvous point and ping the beacon

The rendezvous point will be near a planet within the same star system. Head towards the planet and just when you are about to get close, the marker should disappear. You can then simply use your Starship Scanner (C key/L3/LS) to ping the beacon and you will get a response. Access your Communicator once more to get the message and proceed with the next objective.

    Follow the Voice of Freedom

Another marker will appear on another planet within the star system. Land on the surface of the planet and use your Sweep Scanner once more to locate the exact location. It will lead to a terminal within an observatory. Examine the terminal to get the message and get the Ticket to Freedom. Go into your inventory and select the ticket to Accept the Invitation.

    Jump to an Outlaw Station

The marker will appear at another star system, this time it is a pirate-controlled one. Jump to that star system and head towards its Outlaw Station. Speak to the NPCs within the station and choose the Ask about the Voice of Freedom option. Once you have spoken to enough NPCs, you will receive the Shroud of Freedom.

Afterwards, check out all the other vendor and mission NPCs that are marked within the station. You must also check with the Subverted Station Core and choose the Request the Voice of Freedom option to get the next objective.

Disrupt the traffic records at a station core

Once you board your ship, you will get a task from the station core to disrupt traffic records on another station core. Accept the task and you will receive the Forged Passport. Jump to another regulated star system and head to its space station. Interact with the station core and select the Restore Standing option which will use up the Forged Passport. Board your ship once more and head out into space to complete the mission and receive the Glorious Survivor title.

How to Put on the Shroud of Freedom?

To put on the Shroud of Freedom, you simply have to visit an Appearance Modifier in any space station and put on the shroud from there.

Sadly, the Shroud of Freedom is limited to a single model design for now and can only be worn as an Anomaly. So you must first head to the Race category, switch to an Anomaly, and then go to the Head category and choose Helmet Type #19. The only other customizable options with the shroud for now are the primary, secondary, and accent colours.

Here’s to hoping that Hello Games will allow other races to wear the shroud in a future update.

No Man’s Sky Under a Rebel Star Mission Notes

    • If ever you get interrupted during any hailing ships or pirate battles once in space and miss out on the marker, simply try to re-enter the star system and see if that respawns the marker. If not, reload the save file and the marker should show up once again.
    • You don’t need to unlock or recruit any squadron to initiate the quest line. The quest can be started even without owning a frigate.
