Incense is one of the purchasable Phasmophobia equipment that you can bring with you during investigations. When a ghost is starting to show signs of danger or is actively hunting, you’ll need a precious few seconds to escape its clutches, especially if you run into a dead end. Read ahead as we detail how the Incense works and what effects it has on each tier in Phasmophobia.

What Does the Incense Do in Phasmophobia?

Incense prevents a ghost from starting a hunt when burned. Alternatively, when you use it while the ghost is actively hunting, it will disorient it for a moment giving you enough time to escape.

How to Get the Incense in Phasmophobia

You need to reach Level 14 to unlock Incense and be able to add it to your Loadout. Once you’ve reached Level 14, you can purchase this equipment from the Equipment Store in the lobby.

How Much Does Incense Cost in Phasmophobia?

Incense costs $15 per purchase and will always remain the same price regardless of what tier you’re buying.

    Phasmophobia Incense Tiers

    • Tier I — Has a duration of 3 meters and lasts for 5 seconds. Is a consumable.
    • Tier II — Has a range of 5 meters, lasts 6 seconds, and slows down the ghost during hunts for 5 seconds. Is a consumable.
    • Tier III — Has a range of 5 meters, lasts 7 seconds, and halts the ghost for 5 seconds during hunts.

Once you reach Level 100, you’ll get the option to Prestige. Doing to will reset your Incense tiers back to I.

How to Upgrade Incense in Phasmophobia

Incense can be upgraded by reaching higher levels and paying money at the Equipment Store.

    • Tier II Upgrade — Unlocks at Level 42 and costs $3,500 for the upgrade.
    • Tier III Upgrade — Unlocks at Level 85 and costs $15,000 for the upgrade.

After upgrading the Incense, you can select what tier to bring with you by going to the Equipment Store, your Loadout, and clicking on the Incense. You’ll be able to choose what to bring from the tiers you’ve unlocked.

How to Use the Incense in Phasmophobia

You need an Igniter in your inventory to use the Incense in Phasmophobia. While holding the Incense in your hand, press right click on your mouse to start burning it and activate its effects.

Alternatively, you can also do this the other way around. By throwing the Incense on a surface with the G key, you can aim at it while holding an Igniter then press the F key to start burning.

While it’s burning, the Incense will attempt per second to apply its effects to the ghost. However its effects will only be applied once per each use of the Incense. The effects will only be applied if the ghost is within effective range.

    Incense Effects in Phasmophobia

Incense when burning can stop ghosts from hunting on their own for 90 seconds. This can also cause more ghost activity to happen more during its effects.

Depending on the type of ghost you’re dealing with, the Incense can have different effects during this cleansing. For Demons, the effect is shortened to 60 seconds. For Spirits, the effect lasts 180 seconds. For Yurei, they will have the added affect of returning to their favorite room and cannot roam outside for 60 seconds.

Incense do have limitations. While Incense can stop regular ghost hunts, they can’t prevent cursed hunts from happening. If another Incense is used while the effects of the previous one are still ongoing, the timer for the ongoing effects of the previous Incense will not be reset.

Using Incense during a hunt will not stop the hunt from happening; however, it will disorient the ghost so long as it’s used within the effective range. The ghost under its effects will be unable to detect players, and you can even walk through them without dying. The effects will last for 5 seconds before the ghost goes back to its hunt. This is increased to 7.5 seconds for Moroi ghost types.

Tier II Incense has the additional effect of slowing the ghost down for 5 seconds. The Tier III Incense goes even further and stops the ghost completely for 5 seconds.
