Publisher Goblinz Publishing and developer Laki Studios have announced today that their turn-based tactical roguelike set in the spirit world of the Great Oak, Oaken, has been released onto Early Access on PC (via Steam and GOG). The game supports English, French, German, Simplified Chinese, and Polish languages.

To celebrate the occasion, the publisher released an Early Access release trailer showcasing all the things players can look forward to in the game.

“The whimsical world of Oaken was heavily inspired by Celtic mythology, mixed with a child-like nostalgia from our favorite games growing up,” said Johann Verbroucht, founder and manager at Goblinz Publishing. “We hope players will enjoy the fable-like figurines and folklore-inspired soundtrack, and immerse themselves in the experience!”

Oaken Gameplay 01

Approximately how long will Oaken be in Early Access?

Oaken will remain in Early Access for 5-7 months after entering Early Access.

How will the full version differ from the current version?

“A completely new faction with a new hero and his own pool of units and spells will be added. Also, a few more Guides and an alternative world for each of the first three chapters. Or twice as much in terms of playable content, but the length of a simple playthrough will stay the same. All placeholder art/sounds/VFX will be replaced. Cards and levels will be better balanced. Possibly new modes, like versus, could be added. Finally, the performance will be further improved.”

What is the current state of the game at release?

“At the moment of launching the Early Access the game is intended to be a fully playable beta (1 hero, 3 chapters + epilogue, 4 guides) with no blockers or major bugs.”

About Oaken

Hear the wisps, seedlings, and wanderers as they travel towards the Great Oak’s voice, a mighty tree shrouded by spirits deep in the magical kingdom of Oaken. Harmony reigns under the Great Oak’s steady presence until one day the voice goes silent and chaos engulfs the land in its wake.

Embark on a valiant mission to save the Great Oak. Employ the help of a guide, mighty spirits with distinct abilities to aid the hero in battle, and journey across a randomly generated world map, with numerous levels, bosses, and events in turn-based encounters to uncover. Discover Aya’s special spiky seeds power, Enju’s miracle cure, and myriad magical spells to ambush enemies or replenish your team’s health during combat.

March onto hexagonal battlegrounds allowing strategic attacks, unit rotations, and calculated moves to turn the battle and conquer enemies. Unlock new cards by defeating foes and onward to cleanse the realm from wild spirits, each lost without the Oak’s song and corrupted by a mysterious eclipse. Heal the land by intentionally placing seedlings in key locations to push back and remove the poisonous dusker.

Utilize new branches to push through conflicts, come across randomized events, and gain rewards including wisps and lumi globes capable of upgrading spells and units. Destroy, duplicate, or unwanted cards to create Lumi Dust and improve unit stats to boost their performance on the battlefield. Hire trailers, wardens, and stalker units to protect hero’s health and prevent the troupe from falling in battle.
