The Bank Job Destiny 2 Guide (2023) – Witherhoard & Catalyst

The undisputed menace in grenade launcher form, the Witherhoard is a common sight in both PvP and PvE, and for good reason. The exotic grenade launcher is the ultimate area deny tool in the game.

In PvP, it is used to deny revives, control points, and even displace Guardians from any sort of cover. In PvE, it’s mostly used to keep mobs from leaving their spawn points and zoning them away from your team. Now, the weapon’s been nerfed recently but it seems the changes have not affected its pick rate by much. In fact, the weapon’s seen more use than usual on account of the annoying tactics being deployed in Iron Banner Fortress.

The Bank Job Quest Walkthrough in Destiny 2

The Bank Job Quest is a piece of legacy content from the Shadowkeep expansion. In fact, to even access the Witherhoard you’ll need to have purchased the expansion beforehand.

    Where to Find the Witherhoard

The Witherhoard can be found in the Monument of Lost Light under the Shadowkeep tab. The kiosk itself is located on the main floor of the Tower.

The grenade launcher can be purchased at the cost of:

    • 1x Exotic Cipher
    • 100,000x Glimmer
    • 150x Legendary Shards
    • 1x Ascendant Shard

    Destiny 2 Witherhoard Weapon Stats

The Witherhaord leaves behind a puddle of Blight on the point of impact. Enemies killed by the primary blight round leave behind a lingering puddle that has the potential for more kills. A puddle itself will make any Guardian hesitate to push the lane.

    • Blast Radius: 5
    • Velocity: 12
    • Stability: 68
    • Handling: 63 (100 when Catalyst is active)
    • Reload Speed: 33
    • Aim Assistance: 84
    • Zoom: 12
    • Airborne Effectiveness: 6
    • Rounds Per Minute: 90
    • Magazine: 1
    • Launcher Barrel: Countermas – This weapon is weighted for vertical recoil. Increases stability. Increases handling speed.
    • Magazine Perk: Black Powder – This weapon’s explosives are more effective. Slightly increases blast radius. Decreases stability.
    • 3rd Column Trait: Break the Bank – Blighted targets take damage over time and blight the nearby area on death.
    • Stock: Composite Stock – This weapon has versatile dual-purpose stock. Slightly increases stability. Slightly increases handling speed.
    • Intrinsic Trait: Primeval’s Torment – Projectiles fired by this weapon blight the target or nearby area on impact.

    The Bank Job Quest Steps

    Step 1: Banshee-44 visited

Immediately after acquiring the Witherhoard grenade launcher, a new quest marker will appear at Banshee-44’s weapon workshop. Talk to him and that will start the quest.

    Step 2: High-Stakes Heist

Acquire Vault keys by defeating combatants with Kinetic or Special Grenade Launchers. Rapidly defeat combatants for a higher chance to receive a key.

For this step, you will have to use a grenade launcher in the primary or energy slot to defeat opponents for a chance to spawn Vault Keys. To complete the step, you’ll need to get 50 Vault Keys.

    Step 3: Crime Spree

    • Acquire 300 Filthy Lucre from Gambit, Crucible, and Nightfall
    • 200 Multi-kills with Grenade Launchers
    • 100 Grenade Launcher kills against Guardians.

Acquiring 300 Filthy Lucre is the easiest part of the step. Guardian kills count for more than kills in Vanguard missions. Gambit matches have the potential for both mob and Guardian kills but considering it is Gambit, matches are often so one-sided that it is either going to be feast or famine most of the time.

The Witherhoard is the primary weapon that’s preferred to be used for this quest but you can use any other available GL in your vault.

200 multi-kills with the Explosive Personality is an equally easy feat. This also applies to all wave frame grenade launchers but the Explosive Personality is a cut above the rest and is more accessible as it is a seasonal weapon.

100 GL kills in Crucible are going to take up most of your time. The way I did it was I took a couple of days of playing entire sessions of Crucible with just my Explosive Personality and Empirical Evidence sidearm. You can use any other GL to accomplish this objective but I’d argue that the ease of use of wave frames is second to none.

    Step 4: Clean Getaway

To wrap up the quest, go back to Banshee-44 at the Tower and he’ll reward you with the Witherhoard catalyst.

How to Unlock the Witherhoard Catalyst

To unlock the Catalyst, you’ll need to defeat a certain number of combatants while using Witherhoard. Targets tagged with the GL and finished off by another weapon count toward progression.

The active catalyst increases the weapon’s handling. The weapon also gains the Auto-loading Holster perk where holstering the weapon automatically reloads it after a short period of time.

And that’s what you need to know to complete the Bank Job quest. Happy hunting, Guardians.
