League of Legends Devs Files Lawsuit Against Mobile Legends

Game developer Riot Games, the guys behind popular MOBA League of Legends, is now suing ByeDance’s Shanghai Moonton Technology Co. LTD, the ones behind MOBA Mobile Legends due to copyright issues.

Tencent, the parent company of Riot Games, was the one to file the lawsuit against Moonton. It says that they are suing Moonton due to their “continuing its deliberate and sustained campaign to free ride on Riot’s highly valuable rights in the mobile video game League of Legends Wild Rift and related content.” Tencent accuses Moonton for copying a lot of content from League of Legends and are somehow doing it on purpose.

The parent company stated on the lawsuit that when Riot Games would update League of Legends, Moonton would then copy their content and put it on their MOBA game. They would copy promotional materials and even a trailer that Riot made.

Tencent accuses Moonton for using their “copyist tactics” in order to make and market their mobile video game Mobile Legends BangBang. It is a big competitor against Wild Rift developed by Riot Games. The tactics they employed are actually using Riot’s own trailers, promotional materials, and more for their own and seems to have no originality at all.

In the lawsuit, several images were shared by Tencent showing the logos, characters, items, abilities, and more. It is clear as day that there are too many similarities between the two MOBA games.

One example was the character K/Da from the original League of Legends and Wild Rift and on the other was Mobile Legend’s Guinevere. It was an obvious copy with their crystal tails.

Tencent is now asking for justice to be served. The lawsuit is asking for compensation for financial damages, fees, costs it sustains, and more. No word yet on Moonton.

League of Legends and Wild Rift are now available on Android and iOS. Same as Mobile Legends BangBang.
