Metal Gear Solid Characters and Voice Actors

Some of these voice actors listed here made famous the roles many of us grew up listening to. And continued to do so for many years after MGS1 was released.

David Hayter as Solid Snake

There’s not much I can say that people don’t already know about Solid Snake. He is a master of infiltration by trade and a one-man army when needed. David Hayter, the man, the myth, the legend himself, stayed in the iconic role for many years to come, even voicing Big Boss/Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the spin-off games. Lately, he’s voiced characters like the Bartender in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Paul Eiding as Roy Campbell

Roy Campbell was Snake’s commanding officer during the Shadow Moses incident. He was essentially the game’s tutorial announcer with military stripes. Paul Eiding, his voice actor, would reprise the role in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. He is known for roles outside video games as Max Tennyson from the original run of Ben 10 and Perceptor from the 1980s Transformers series and movie.

Jennifer Hale as Naomi Hunter

The mission’s science officer in a way, Naomi Hunter provided Snake with knowledge about FOXHOUND members including their habits and weaknesses. Dubbed the most prolific video game voice actor (female), Jennifer Hale would later voice dozens of characters in video games and other media. Some of her recent works include giving voice to Bayonetta in Bayonetta 3 and Ashe from Overwatch 2. She will also be forever remembered as the voice of (female) Commander Shepard.

Kim Mai Guest as Mei Ling

Snake’s radio support team during the Shadow Moses, Mei Ling can be relied on to save the player’s progress and the small bits of wisdom she imparts to Snake using Chinese proverbs. She would later return in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as a commanding officer aboard the museum ship, USS Missouri. Kim Mai Guest is credited for many background characters over the years. Her voice can be heard in Diablo IV, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Ghost of Tsushima, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Renee Raudman as Nastasha Romanenko

Nastasha Romanenko provided Snake with information on weapons, both conventional and nuclear. If you call her up after picking up a new weapon, she will give a detailed description of it. Renee Raudman is also known as the voice of Kiku from Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins and Gungrave: Overdose’s (2004) Mika and Maria Asagi, as well as Sherry Walken.

Cam Clarke as Master Miller and Liquid Snake

An adviser in all things survival during the Shadow Moses incident, Master Miller talks a lot about living in Alaska. It was later revealed to be Liquid Snake posing as Miller. Cam Clarke is still active today having played dozens upon dozens of roles in video games and anime. Currently, he is the voice of Leonardo in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2.

Debi Mae West as Meryl Silverburgh

Meryl is Campbell’s niece who got captured after FOXHOUND took over the base. What she lacks in experience, she makes up for fighting spirit. She would return as an experienced squad leader by the time Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots rolls up. Her voice actress, Debi Mae West is also known as the English voice of Tsunade in Naruto and Naruto Shippuden.

Christopher Randolph as Hal Emmerich (Otacon)

Hal Emmerich is introduced as a weapons engineer and anime enthusiast in Metal Gear Solid. He has since expanded his horizons, playing a big role in the hunting down of Metal Gear clones, alongside Solid Snake. While Christopher Randolph has credits in other roles in video games and TV, it is with Otacon that he is most remembered by. He also voiced Hal’s father, Huey Emmerich, in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Greg Eagles as the Cyborg Ninja and Decoy Octopus

The Cyborg Ninja is a mysterious figure who initially appears as an indiscriminate killing machine with a fractured mind. He was just as likely to kill Snake as he was to help him. Not much is known about Decoy Octopus. He died after getting exposed to the FOXDIE virus. Greg Eagles is still active to this day in both video games and TV. He has reprised his role as Aku-Aku in Crash Team Rumble. It is also worth noting that he voices Peter Stillman in Metal Gear Solid 2.

Patric Zimmerman as Revolver Ocelot

Revolver Ocelot is an ex-Spetsnaz operative with a soft spot for American spaghetti westerns and torture. In the game, his weapon of choice was the Colt Single Action Army Revolver. Patric Zimmerman continued to voice Ocelot up until Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots who at that point was referred to as Liquid Ocelot.

Peter Lurie as Vulcan Raven

The best way to describe Vulcan Raven is a mountain of a man armed with a 20mm autocannon. His boss fight will be remembered as a cat-and-mouse chase where land mines and missile launchers reigned supreme. His voice actor, Peter Lurie, is very much active today with roles such as Sabretooth in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. He was also the English voice actor for Natsuhiko Nakanohara in Persona 5 Royal.

Tasia Valenza as Sniper Wolf

Sniper Wolf was an exceptional sniper who could wait upwards of a week for her prey to expose themselves. She cares for the wolves that hunt in the snowfields around the base. Otacon was never the same after her passing. Although Tasia Valenza still voices characters to this day, she is best known for Sniper Wolf and Poison Ivy from the Batman Arkham series. She also voiced Myra from The Evil Within and Ultimecia from Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy.

Doug Stone as Psycho Mantis

Psycho Mantis is a powerful psychic whose mind-reading abilities ensure that players on controller port 1 have no chance against him. If you have a memory card active on your PlayStation, he will comment on games you have played. (Provided they were released well before 1999.) Doug Stone is still active today, after accumulating a long list of appearances, voicing various characters in video games and TV.
