I got an early look at Starfield’s biggest update yet—Free Lanes, Terran Armada, and the PS5 Launch.
I thought Starfield was already massive when I reviewed it… Bethesda clearly isn’t done yet. The game is getting one of its biggest updates so far, alongside a brand-new DLC and a long-awaited PlayStation 5 release.
During an exclusive Starfield Digital Preview event, Bethesda offered an early look at the game’s next major update, upcoming DLC, and a major platform expansion. The showcase featured a full gameplay presentation and live Q&A with Tim Lamb, Lead Creative Producer on Starfield at Bethesda Game Studios, who walked attendees through the future of the game.
The presentation revealed the Free Lanes update, the Terran Armada DLC, and confirmed Starfield’s long-awaited PlayStation 5 launch on April 7. From expanded space travel and deeper customization systems to new enemies, vehicles, and quality-of-life upgrades, this next update isn’t just adding content, it’s reshaping how Starfield is played.
What makes this update stand out is that a lot of this simply wasn’t in Starfield before. You can now travel between planets in real time, customize your gear at a much deeper level, and even bring items with you into New Game Plus.
Starfield PlayStation 5 Launch and New Pricing
One of the biggest announcements from the event was that Starfield will launch on PlayStation 5 on April 7, alongside the new content updates.
“We’re really excited to welcome a whole new group of players into the Settled Systems,” Lamb said.
During the Q&A, Bethesda also confirmed updated pricing:
- Standard Edition – $49.99
- Premium Edition – $69.99

“The premium edition includes everything, Shattered Space, Terran Armada, and 1,000 credits,” Lamb confirmed. These new prices will also apply to Xbox and PC versions.
“This has been a collaborative process with our community,” he said. “We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who’s stuck with us, shared ideas, and encouraged the team to continue to grow and refine Starfield.”
Rather than overhaul the game entirely, Bethesda is focused on refining and expanding its core experience. “We’re not trying to reinvent the game,” Lamb added. “We’re trying to build on what’s there, highlight what’s great, and expand where we can bring more fun.”
A Growing Universe Built With Players
Bethesda emphasized that Starfield’s evolution has been shaped heavily by community feedback since launch.
“Starfield has grown a bit since then, and that growth has been shaped by what players have told us,” said Lamb. According to Lamb, the team has implemented hundreds of fixes, new features, and gameplay improvements based on player input.
Early community requests led to additions such as surface maps, expanded display settings, DLSS and FSR support, and numerous quality-of-life improvements. Hundreds of fixes, gameplay tweaks, and new systems have already been added over multiple patches.
“We’re not trying to reinvent the game,” Lamb said during the presentation. “We’re trying to build on what’s there, highlight what’s great, and expand where we can bring more fun.” The upcoming updates continue that philosophy.
Free Lanes: A New Way to Explore Space
The Free Lanes update is the largest update to Starfield yet, introducing deeper exploration systems and new ways to experience space travel. Instead of jumping from planet to planet through menus, Free Lanes lets you actually move through space within a star system. It turns travel into gameplay rather than just a transition.
“Players wanted to take more control of space between planets,” Lamb explained. “So we added the ability to cruise.”

One of the headline features is Cruise Mode, which lets you fly between planets manually at different speed levels. You can boost to reach your destination faster or take your time and see what’s out there. And it is not just about getting from point A to point B.
While cruising, players can:
- Walk around their ship while it travels
- Interact with crew and companions
- Manage inventory and equipment
- Decorate interiors
- Track travel progress using onboard navigation
While traveling, players can move freely inside their ship, interact with companions, manage gear, and prepare for upcoming encounters. “But being in the Free Lanes isn’t just about getting there,” Lamb said. “It’s about living a life on your ship.”
Free Lanes also adds dynamic encounters during travel. You might come across anomalies, wreckage, enemy ships, or random events that pull you back into gameplay. It adds unpredictability to space, which was something players had been asking for.
In the Q&A, Lamb explained that Free Lanes is not meant to replace the way players already move through the game, but to offer a different pace. Players who want to jump straight into missions can still do that, but those who prefer to slow down and explore will now find more happening between destinations. He described it as “a different way to play,” adding that players can take their time and run into new encounters or distractions while traveling through space.
New Weapon Customization System
Free Lanes introduces XTech, a new resource designed to significantly expand weapon and gear customization.
“XTech gives us a lot of ability to customize particular attributes of a weapon,” Lamb said. Using XTech, players can:
- Add legendary modifiers to weapons
- Install upgrade modules
- Re-roll weapon perks
- Upgrade weapons to higher rarity tiers
Weapons can now reach Legendary Rank 4, adding powerful gameplay effects. Some of the new perks include:
- Kismet – Chance to triple magazine size after reloading
- Bloodthirsty – Killing enemies restores health
- Saboteur – Chance to instantly destroy robots
- Reckless – Massive damage boost with reduced magazine size
Players can also upgrade weapons beyond the original rarity tiers, allowing them to push gear even further.
“We wanted to give players a way to customize how they want to play the game more,” Lamb explained. Importantly, XTech is not limited to endgame content, appearing in boss encounters and exploration rewards throughout the game.
New Vehicle: Moon Jumper
The update also expands exploration with new locations, dungeons, and points of interest across different planets. There is also a new vehicle called the Moon Jumper, designed to make planetary traversal more flexible.

The Moon Jumper, a new exploration vehicle that leans heavily into mobility and freedom. Unlike standard vehicles, this one is built around powerful boost capabilities that let you reach higher terrain and cover uneven landscapes much more easily.
During the demo, Tim Lamb highlighted how the Moon Jumper can gain significant elevation, to the point where it “almost feels like flying”. It is not a true flight system, but the extended boost and airtime make it ideal for navigating cliffs, rocky environments, and wide open areas that would normally slow you down.
What makes it stand out even more is how you actually get it. Instead of simply purchasing it like other vehicles, the Moon Jumper is tied to exploration. Players can discover it at a specific point of interest, reinforcing the update’s overall push to reward curiosity and exploration across planets.
At the same time, it is not just a utility tool. Lamb also pointed out that it is simply fun to use, whether you are trying to reach hard-to-access areas or just driving around open terrain. It fits neatly into the broader goal of the Free Lanes update, which is to make movement and exploration feel more dynamic and engaging rather than just a means to an end.
Ship Customization and Upgrades, Outposts, and Exploration
The update also introduces major improvements to ships and outposts. Free Lanes expands starship gameplay with new ship modules and optimization systems.
Players can now enhance ships with new modules and optimization systems using XTech as well. “We wanted to add more ways to improve and customize spaceships,” Lamb said.

Players can now install equipment such as:
- EM Pulse Shielding
- Anti-targeting systems
- Evasive stealth drives
- Ship scrap units
- Micro reactors
A new Ship Optimization Terminal lets players enhance systems like:
- Shields
- Engines
- Weapon reload speed
- Hull integrity
- Cargo management

Ships can also use stealth systems previously exclusive to Starborn vessels.
Outposts receive new features as well, including shared storage systems, a highly requested addition. “This has been a huge request from the fans,” Lamb noted, referring to the new shared outpost container, which allows players to access inventory across multiple bases.
The update also adds new points of interest and exploration content across planets. “We really wanted to encourage players to get out there and explore,” he said.
New additions include:
- Shared Outpost Containers, allowing players to share inventory between multiple outposts
- New decorative crafting stations
- Elevated pre-built habitats
- Pets and cosmetic additions
- Collectible Colony War Action Figures, which grant gameplay bonuses
One of the more unexpected additions is the Millie Whale Pet, which you can unlock through a quest in the Free Lanes update. It is less about gameplay and more about personality. You can customize how it looks and interact with it at your outpost, which adds a surprisingly cozy touch to the whole experience.

Bethesda also introduced a database system that helps players track discovered resources, recipes, and planetary locations. Players can now easily find materials, track crafting requirements, and navigate directly to planets that contain specific resources.
The team also addressed feedback around repetition in planetary content. According to Lamb, Bethesda has adjusted how points of interest are distributed and added more variety, encouraging players to explore and discover new locations more organically.
Starborn and New Game Plus Improvements
Free Lanes also changes how players interact with Starfield’s New Game Plus system. A new Quantum Entanglement Device allows players to store certain items before entering the Unity so they can retrieve them in the next universe.
“We didn’t want to dissuade players from engaging in becoming Starborn,” Lamb said. “But we also didn’t want to ask them to leave everything behind.”
Quantum Essence now has additional uses, including upgrading Starborn powers directly without repeating temple runs. Starborn ships will also drop Quantum Essence when destroyed, making the resource easier to obtain.
“We’re making that power more accessible to players,” he added.
New Crew Members and Companions
The update introduces new companions, including fan-favorite NPC Maria, who is now recruitable. “Players loved Maria,” Lamb said. “So we made her recruitable.”

The update also introduces a small robot companion known as Model G, which players can repair and recruit. While not built for combat, the quirky robot adds personality and comedic moments to exploration.
A New Aspirational Player Home
For players who have amassed large amounts of credits, Bethesda introduced a new high-end reward: a fully customizable asteroid base.

“We wanted to provide the greatest aspirational item in Starfield,” Lamb explained.
This hollowed-out asteroid base in space features living areas, guest suites, offices, a gym, game room, and panoramic views of space, giving players a true endgame home. The new asteroid player home is also fully customizable, with separate areas that players can decorate, giving them more freedom to create a personal base in space.
Terran Armada DLC
Alongside Free Lanes, Bethesda is launching Terran Armada, a smaller story-focused expansion. “Terran Armada is a smaller story DLC, and we’re excited for players to experience the new quest line,” Lamb said.
The expansion introduces:
- A new questline
- Terran Armada enemy faction
- New weapons and equipment
- Powerful robotic enemies
- Unique loot and encounters
Enemies in the expansion can now have legendary modifiers, giving them new abilities and making combat encounters more dynamic. While Bethesda is keeping most of the story details under wraps, the Terran Armada DLC was presented as a more combat-focused experience built around tougher enemies and high-intensity encounters. Tim Lamb described it as a smaller story expansion, but from what was shown, it still introduces meaningful changes to how combat plays out.

During the demo, enemies were shown with new modifiers that make them more unpredictable and dangerous. Some had the ability to avoid damage, while others could trigger effects that strengthened nearby enemies when defeated. It adds a layer of challenge that goes beyond simply increasing enemy health, making encounters feel more dynamic.
The DLC also introduces new weapons and gear, including the multi-gun platform and an energy-based SMG, both of which were used during the gameplay segment. Lamb also showcased a Terran Armada ship that had been commandeered, confirming that players will be able to capture and use enemy ships as part of their progression. In fact, capturing ships appears to be one of the most direct ways to expand your fleet.
The mission shown followed a more structured sequence, with the player infiltrating a facility, fighting through waves of enemies, securing a keycard, and triggering a reactor overload before escaping. While only a small slice was shown, it gives a clear idea of the kind of gameplay the DLC is aiming for, blending combat, objectives, and a sense of urgency.
Even without full story details, the Terran Armada DLC comes across as a more action-driven addition that complements the broader systems introduced in Free Lanes, giving players new reasons to engage with the world and test the limits of their gear and builds.
In the Q&A, Lamb also revealed that the Free Lanes update and Terran Armada DLC were designed to work together. The Terran Armada introduces incursions across star systems, with technology that can prevent players from grav jumping within certain areas. As a result, players are pushed to travel through space using the new Free Lanes systems to reach and deal with these threats.
Lamb explained that Free Lanes and Terran Armada were designed to support each other, with new enemy incursions forcing players to travel through space rather than relying solely on fast travel.
The Future of Starfield
Looking ahead, Bethesda confirmed that Starfield will continue to receive long-term support.
While no future updates were announced, Lamb noted that the team still has plenty of ideas and content they want to explore within the game’s universe. “When we launch a game, we always plan to support it for a number of years,” Lamb said. “There’s a lot more in the lore… things we still want to pursue.”
With the Free Lanes update, Terran Armada DLC, and the PlayStation 5 launch arriving together, Starfield is entering a new phase.
As Lamb put it: “The goal is to add depth, fun, and opportunities for players to express themselves, not turn the game into something entirely different.”
The Free Lanes update, Terran Armada DLC, and PlayStation 5 version of Starfield all launch April 7, 2026.
