Mortal Kombat Legacy Features Are Chosen by Length of Its Absence in the Franchise

The Mortal Kombat franchise has become a big franchise due to its unique gameplay mechanics and the gore included. There are other features as well, which makes it more interesting to play because it can be unlocked in different ways in different titles. These are the legacy modes like the Stage Fatalities, Friendships, Babalities, and many more. Every title has its own legacy mode or modes and improves in the next.

Many fans have noticed this though from previous titles of the series. Sometimes one title will be missing one or two legacy modes, and the next will not have the previous legacy mode but introduce a new or a returning one instead. They have been confused of the process for adding these features and needed some clarification from the studio.

This is where Game Director and Co-Founder Ed Boon finally made it clear for everyone with his statement.

Boon shared that they were lucky enough to have many kinds of features that several fans loved through the years. The problem now was that there are too many of those legacy features that have accumulated and the team could not possibly add every single one of them in one game. There are several reasons for that like current hardware and technology limits, not enough time, and being just too many of them to recreate for one game.

The only way they could appease the fans in some way was to give some of these legacy features a break and just bring them back again using new technology at that time. Since Friendship was not introduced many previous titles, the studio decided it was time to bring it back. It has been years since it was introduced to the franchise.

The Babality legacy feature was a hit way back in Mortal Kombat 9, so it was naturally time for Friendship to come back. Stage Fatalities are back again as well.

Mortal Kombat 11 and its expansion Aftermath are already available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
