In the Shadow of the Study relationship quest Walkthrough

After completing the requires quests and receiving Sebastian’s owl message about an update, talk to Sebastian over at the Slytherin common room to start the quest.

Meet Sebastian outside the Slytherin common room

After talking to Sebastian, you’ll convince him that you’ll to Ominis to learn more about the scriptorium.

Go with Sebastian to meet Ominis

Follow Sebastian to meet up with Ominis who is in the corridor nearby.

Speak with Ominis

Speak with Ominis to convince him to help you uncover the secrets of the scriptorium.

Open Slytherin’s door

To open the door, you will need to fire up the braziers that are found along the corridor. With the door behind you, there are two braziers to the left where you came from, and a brazier up ahead. From the corner where Ominis is standing, you can easily cast Confringo towards these braziers to light them up in quick succession. Once you manage to light all of them up, the door will open.

Explore beyond the doorway

Head into the dark room where you’ll find Noctua Gaunt’s note #1, a pile of rubble, and a locked door.

Figure out how to progress

Approach the rubble and cast Reparo to fix the relief on the wall. This will cause Ominis to start hearing voices and hissing.

Speak with Ominis about the hissing

Talk to Ominis to find out about the hissing. He will reveal that he is a Parselmouth and he started hearing the voices once you repaired the relief. You’ll then convince him to open the locked door ahead.

Wait for Ominis to open the door

Watch as Ominis opens up the door within his Parseltongue.

Explore beyond the Serpent Door

Inside the next area, you’ll see a locked gate to the right. Up in the area ahead is a half-opened door and another locked gate.

Find a way through

To open these gates, look at the symbols etched in the middle of them, then locate the Slytherin combination locks that are closest to them. The gate one near the entrance has its lock beside it, while the one up ahead has its lock inside the room past the half-opened gate. Noctua Gaunt’s note #2 can also be found in that room.

Open the gate up ahead first using the symbols of an animal with a tail on the top ring and a triangle with a tail on the bottom ring. On the left wall is Noctua Gaunt’s note #3 and up ahead is a chest. You’ll also find the third gate with the circle with two tails symbol and the triangle symbol. Take note of these for later.

Then, open the gate near the entrance using the circle symbol and the snake symbol. Behind this gate is the lock for the third gate and Noctua Gaunt’s note #4. Put in the symbols of the third gate on the lock to open it.

Head back to the third gate and go through the next corridor to find Noctua Gaunt’s note #5 and a door with the word CRUCIO etched on the floor.

Talk to Sebastian

Sebastian has figured out how to open a door and they need Ominis’ help to cast the Crucio spell to open the door. Sebastian asks whether who between you two should talk to Ominis; you can choose whichever option.

Talk to Ominis about Crucio / Wait for Sebastian to talk to Ominis

Either talk to Ominis or wait for Sebastian to talk to Ominis to convince him about the plan. Ominis will reject it, so it’s up to you and Sebastian.

Talk to Sebastian

Sebastian then reveals that he may cast Crucio seeing that you have no other choice. He can also teach you the spell so that you can cast it on him. You’ll be given three options to choose from: Sebastian casts it on you, you learn the spell and have Sebastian cast it on you, or you’ll learn the spell and cast it on Sebastian. Choosing the second and the third option will have you learn Crucio; choosing the first option will lock you out from learning the spell.

Other than learning the spell, choosing any of the other responses won’t affect any of the other quests up ahead.

Explore beyond the doorway

After the spell has been casted, the door to the next area will then open. You can also heal up with your potions if ever you decided to get casted on with the spell. There are also some chests to get gear from in the room.

Search Slytherin’s Scriptorium

Go to the altar up ahead to find Slytherin’s Spellbook.

Give the book to Sebastian

Go talk to Sebastian once again and hand him over the book.

Leave the Scriptorium

Head up upper level of the room to find the secret exit.

Listen to what Ominis has to say

Listen to the short dialogue between Ominis and Sebastian. After it, you’ll complete the quest.

You’ll receive the following after completing the quest:

Learning Crucio

If you decide not to learn Crucio during this quest, you’ll have another chance of learning it later on. You can still visit Sebastian in the Undercroft and ask him to learn the Unforgivable Spells. This will only be available once you’ve gone through this quest and as long as you don’t choose to turn in Sebastian during the In the Shadow of Fate quest.
