Developer 4A Games has unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 during the Xbox Games Showcase, while also confirming that the next entry in the post-apocalyptic shooter series will launch in February 2027.
The nearly three-minute gameplay presentation was captured entirely in-game and offered the first look at the title’s new antagonist, Hunter, who has risen to power as the Metro’s self-proclaimed Fuhrer. Once regarded as a legendary Spartan Ranger and protector of the underground civilization, Hunter now leads a regime built on propaganda and control.
Metro 2039 follows a protagonist known as The Stranger, a member of the Spartan Order who has become determined to expose Hunter’s lies and bring down his rule. According to the trailer, the conflict between the two figures forms the core of the game’s story as the Metro continues to descend into turmoil.
The gameplay footage showcased many of the series’ signature elements, including tense stealth encounters, claustrophobic tunnel exploration, and dangerous journeys across the radioactive surface. Survival mechanics also return, maintaining the immersive and atmospheric gameplay that has defined the Metro franchise.
Players also received a look at several new tools and weapons. Among them is the Shatun, a new stealth-focused weapon designed for silent takedowns, alongside breaching charges that can be used to access new areas and create tactical opportunities during combat.
Visually, Metro 2039 appears to continue the franchise’s focus on realism and environmental storytelling, with detailed underground settlements, ruined landscapes, and dynamic lighting effects showcased throughout the trailer.
Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch in February 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC via Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
