Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition Announced; PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Upgrade Detailed

Game publisher Deep Silver and developer 4A Games have recently announced that there will be a Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition soon.

PC Enhanced vs New Gen Versions

The PC Enhanced Edition of the game will offer a fully ray traced experience for PC players. This will also be available on new gen consoles as well, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This is due to the overhaul of the studio’s proprietary 4A Engine. This has made them build the all-new Fully Ray Traced Lighting Pipeline, which offers tons of optimizations, upgrades, and new features to the Ray Traced Global Illumination and Emissive Lighting that they have pioneered with the original game.

To take full advantage of the PC Enhanced Edition, it is required to have at least a Ray Tracing capable video card. This will be a separate product rather than just a simple patch. Here’s the full quote:

This upgrade is so extensive, it will require a Ray Tracing capable GPU as the minimum spec, and we will need to deliver this version as a separate product – it is not a simple ‘patch’ to the base game –  instead it will be offered as an extra entitlement to all existing Metro Exodus PC players.

The PC Enhanced Edition will offer additional Ray Tracing features, including Advanced Ray Traced Reflections and support for DLSS 2.0 on NVIDIA hardware, which offers sharper image details and increased framerates and display resolutions.

To make this all better, players who already have the original game can get the PC Enhanced Edition for free on Epic Games Store, Steam, and GOG. It is expected to be released sometime in Spring 2021.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will run at 4K/60fps with full Ray Traced lighting throughout. All content in the game will feature both ground-breaking Ray Traced Global Illumination and the Ray Traced Emissive Lighting techniques.

Loading times will be dramatically reduced due to the use of the SSD storage optimizations, boast 4K texture packs, and lots of platform specific features like spatial audio and controller latency improvements on Xbox, and support for haptic features of the PS5 DualSense controller.

Xbox Series S will have 1080p, but the framerate is still being determined so more info on that later. The new gen versions of Metro Exodus will be available later this year and will be free to download as an upgrade for all current owners.
