Randy’s Throwing Knife is back in Destiny 2 Season of the Deep as a Crucible reward. This weapon was infamous back in its heyday as a DPS monster in PvP. And it’s to see why. The high rate of fire coupled with its accuracy gives any Guardian in its kill ranges a moment of pause. The Season of the Deep version of the weapon comes with some pretty stacked perks, including Kinetic Tremors and Zen Moment.
How to get Randy’s Throwing Knife in Destiny 2?
Players have a chance of getting a Randy Throwing Knife at the end of Crucible games. The scout rifle is part of the potential rewards pool. The chances of getting random rolls to drop dramatically increase during events like Iron Banner.
As of the writing of the article, there currently is no way of focus decode the weapon from Lord Shaxx at the tower. That should change closer to next season or possibly at the start of next season. Your chances of getting a drop with multiple perk options increase the more times you reset your Crucible rank.
Best Randy’s Throwing Knife PvP God Roll
- 1st Column: Arrowhead Break
- 2nd Column: High-Caliber Rounds
- Range or Stability Masterwork
- Counterbalance Stock Mod
- Zen Moment + Box Breathing (This combination is perfect for players who lie and wait for the enemy to make the first move. Keep your scope up for a couple of seconds, let Box Breathing kick, and then once you deal extra precision damage with the first shot, go wild with Zen Moment.)
- Perfect Float + Encore (This is a very good snowball combo for the 6v6 playlist. We were skeptical of Perfect Float at first but we realized that we can get in some pretty extended fights with more opponents on the field. The only reason you want Perfect Float is for the flinch resist. And that’ll go a long way once Encore gets going and you are pretty much a rock.)
- Rapid Hit + Kill Clip (A classic scout rifle combination. Keep landing headshots to reload faster. Get Kill Clip running for the extra damage. Rinse and repeat for as long as needed.)
- Rapid Hit + Cascade Point (This pairing exclusively with an energy weapon that’s good in all ranges. And a machine gun. You just need one kill and you’ll have Cascade Point active for a few seconds. Also, consider having Stability Masterwork. Range isn’t much of an issue for something that shoots very quickly.)
First off, let us just say that Randy’s Throwing Knife is a threat even at extreme ranges. Don’t let the low range stat fool you. This scout rifle fires so quickly that it can potentially let off 2-3 bullets at the same time a high-impact frame can shoot once. You can even use it as a pseudo assault rifle/SMG in awkward situations where you and the enemy are uncomfortably close to each other.
PvP Tip:
As good as this gun is in long-range duels, we don’t advise straight-up dueling a good Jade Rabbit or Polaris Lance player. You’ll win sometimes but the damage output is a little too hard to overcome. Rapid-fire frames allow you to be more mobile than your everyday scout rifle user. Keep moving and go for multiple angles, at least that’s how we use this weapon in the Crucible.
We’ve found that range isn’t everything for this scout rifle. Stability and a perfect recoil direction seem to affect performance the most. At least that’s what we’ve noticed using different rolls inside Crucible matches.
Best Randy’s Throwing Knife PvE God Roll
- 1st Column: Arrowhead Break
- 2nd Column: Extended Mag (Flared Magwell + Backup Mag as an alternative)
- Range Masterwork
- Boss Spec Mod
- Rapid Hit + Kinetic Tremors (This is very satisfying in most PvE content. Because Randy’s Throwing Knifes shoots so quickly, you’ll be able to activate Kinetic Tremors in no time flat. Couple that with the precision hits that activate Rapid Hit and you have a recipe for disaster for the enemies of humanity.)
- Discord + Cascade Point (This combo takes a bit of practice to pull off. Getting kills gives a small window to activate Cascade Point. The Cascade Point is meant to deal with Majors while Discord returns ammo for each kill you get while it is active. It’s quite the rush when everything falls into place.)
Unlike some other Crucible weapons, Randy’s Throwing Knife is very much a viable option in PvE. And it’s all thanks to both Kinetic Tremors and Discord. It’s a very fun pick, for sure. Why not try running it on a Salvage mission sometime?
PvE Tip:
Randy’s Throwing Knife only needs 6 shots to activate Kinetic Tremors. And we don’t need to tell you how fast you can get those shots off. Of course, you’ll still want to be aiming at the crit spot of yellow bars to take advantage of Rapid Hit. Red Bars don’t stand much of a chance and will very rarely live long enough to activate Kinetic Tremors.
How Good is the Randy’s Throwing Knife Scout Rifle?
Randy’s Throwing Knife is probably one of the best weapons to drop as a Crucible reward. And we’re taking into account last season’s awesome pulse rifle, the Autumn Wind. But we just don’t see many Crucible weapons as versatile as Randy’s Throwing Knife. It’s also a rapid-fire frame so it gets the benefit of being a forgiving weapon in most players’ hands.
We highly advise getting that 5/5 god roll especially if you are a Crucible enthusiast. And even if you only get a 3/5 god roll, that’s already good enough on its own. The weapon’s doing most of the heavy lifting, the perks just shape your playstyle.
These are Randy’s Throwing Knife Stats before any perks are applied:
- Impact: 45
- Range: 23
- Stability: 39
- Handling: 20
- Reload Speed: 28
- Zoom: 20
- Rounds Per Minute: 260
- Magazine: 17
What Randy’s Throwing Knife lacks in raw stats, it makes up with a very deep perk pool with combinations that serves a lot of playstyles.

In the meantime, enjoy your time in the Crucible, and don’t let anyone get you down. Good luck and have fun out there, Guardians.
