The good news is that we finally have a release date for the much anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. The bad news is that it’s not within this year.
Rockstar has recently issued an apology and an announcement that GTA VI, which was expected to release this Fall 2025, has been officially delayed to May 25, 2026. That’s more than one year from the time of this writing, folks! Apparently the development of our favorite open world crime simulator still needs some time in the oven.
“We are very sorry that this was later than you expected,” which was the statement from Rockstar. “…the interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and patience as we work to finish the game. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Rockstar then ends the announcement that they’re eager to share more news with their audience. Take Two may share more details with the world during its financial results this May 15th. It should be noted that the delay caused Take Two’s stock price to drop 8 percent at NASDAQ after the announcement.

The first time we caught a glimpse of GTA VI was all the way back in December 2023. We haven’t heard much, if at all, about how the game’s development was going. We only know that the game takes place in Vice City, a location a lot of players, myself included, are eager to get back into.
The wait may seem long but it may be a better alternative to releasing an unfinished game. You may be shocked at such a large timeline delay, but it’s honestly a blessing to give the developers that much time to prepare. I’m sure we’re all excited to play the very first female protagonist Rockstar has to offer in this Bonnie-and-Clyde themed story but there are a lot of games now that may be more comfortable giving us their release date for 2025 now that GTA VI isn’t going to be competition until next year.
