The Compass Rose is a returning weapon exclusive to the Solstice of Heroes event. It is a precision frame Solar shotgun that’s had its perk pool refreshed with new and updated perks. Similar to Something New last year, the shotgun was mostly ignored due to how uninteresting it ultimately.
The perk refresh did stir some interest in us. But it ultimately boiled down to a handful of choice rolls. For right now, it feels like the refresh did nothing than shake things up instead of making the gun better. We did enjoy it the most as a Solar precision frame paired up with a Solar build.
How to Get Compass Rose in Destiny 2?
The Compass Rose is one of the weapons obtainable during the Solstice of Heroes event. As such, the only way to get a random roll is to take part in the Bonfire Bash activity and hope that the shotgun drops for you at the end of the activity.
To get the most out of the activity, Guardians should always aim to gather 30 ignition orbs as quickly as possible to force the boss encounter early, and to ensure the best rewards at the end of the activity.
Best Compass Rose PvP God Roll
- 1st Column: Smoothbore
- 2nd Column: Accurized Rounds
- Range Masterwork
- Quick Access Sling
- Surplus + Cascade Point (This roll is more for the regular shotgun enjoyer who happens to like to dabble in Cascade Point. Used almost as a backup, this combination makes it possible to get a clean-up shot faster on an enemy that’s on the outer limits of shotgun range.)
Alternative Roll
- 1st Column: Corkscrew Rifling
- 2nd Column: Accurized Rounds
- Range Masterwork
- Quick Acess Sling
- Quickdraw + Snapshot Sights (For Guardians who fight at a quick pace. Best used in 1 vs 1 situations. Relies heavily on a Guardian’s ability to duel and track fast-moving targets.)
PvP Tips
Ever since the shotgun changes last year, Precision Frames in PvP have shot up in popularity. This effect should also apply to Compass Rose. If you can manage to get a roll with Quickdraw, Surplus, or Snapshot Sights you might want to try them out. The rolls above are chosen for what they bring to a 6v6 match and a 3v3 match, respectively. Though either roll can work if you know how to play them right.
Cascade Point could have an interesting perk to add. It doesn’t fire nearly as fast as we expected. The best thing about the perk is that it removes the pump animation while active, turning Compass Rose into a Rapid Fire Lite for a few seconds. Surplus is there to increase your Handling and Stability. Not necessary but greatly appreciated.
Snapshot Sights is an interesting choice. There are some Guardians who prefer to not aim their shotguns as the iron sights can throw you off target. Most shotgun users (such as myself) prefer to use the reticle as a guide. Once a Guardian fills in the shape, that’s when we pull the trigger. Snapshot is valued most in close quarters where a split second is the difference between winning or losing a fight.
Best Compass Rose PvE God Rolls
- 1st Column: Corkscrew Rifling
- 2nd Column: Tactical Mag
- Reload Speed Masterwork
- Backup Mag Mod
- Genesis + Vorpal Weapon (This was last year’s PvE god roll. It’s used mostly to deal with Majors and Champions. It has what it takes to keep up in end-game content provided there’s a Solar Surge active in the activity.)
- Grave Robber + Trench Barrel (This combination incorporates melee into the mix. Powered melee attacks can activate Grave Robber. But you still need to use normal melee attacks to activate Trench Barrel.)
PvE Tips
There’s not much to say about the Compass Rose in PvE. It’s nice to have when a Solar Surge is active. But we feel like there are a number of other Solar shotguns that can do the job better. (And make better use of Incandescent.)
But then again there aren’t many Precision Frame shotguns out in the game at the moment. And certainly, not many of them are Solar. It might be worth keeping a PvE god roll just for that reason.
How good is the Compass Rose?
For what it is, the Compass Rose is an ok shotgun despite the fact that it has the lowest stability out of all precision frames that are active right now. If we’re comparing stats, the Fractetyst has got it beat.
The Dream Work Origin Trait can be useful in team-based activities. That’s probably where you’ll it most. In solo content, it’s just another precision frame that happens to have an affinity with Solar.
These are the Compass Rose Base Stats before any perks are applied:
- Impact: 70
- Range: 62
- Stability: 41
- Handling: 35
- Reload Speed: 48
- Rounds Per Minute: 65
- Magazine: 5
The perk refresh mostly changed things up. The weapon lost a great perk in Golden Tricorn and in its place, we got some interesting perks such as Cascade Point and Envious Assassin.
3rd Column Perks
- Surplus
- Quickdraw
- Lead From Gold
- Shot Swap
- Genesis
- Under-Over
- Grave Robber
4th Column Perks
- Snapshot Sights
- Trench Barrel
- Vorpal Weapon
- Incandescent
- Adagio
- Envious Assassin
- Cascade Point
All in all, the Compass Rose is not something you want to grind for throughout the event. It is simply good at being unremarkable. If you happen to stumble upon a really good roll, you may want to hold on to it for now. At least until a better Solar Precision Frame shows up.
Enjoy the rest of the Solstice of Heroes 2023 event. Good luck and have fun out there, Guardians.
