You first need to purchase a ship in Sea of Thieves before you can customize it. You cannot customize any of the base ships that you can use for free unless you’re just decorating the skins. If you want to add trinkets and use the new Sea of Thieves ship customization features in the Captaincy update, then you do need to purchase one of the ship types on offer.

Just after you’ve bought your ship, you’ll be given a short tutorial of how the new Captaincy update works. This will introduce you to the new customization options Rare added for your ship in Sea of Thieves.

There are plenty of decorations to choose from on the Shipwright store. You can place trinkets in your ship, redecorate the interior of your Captain’s room, and even keep track of your ship stats using the Captain’s Logbook. It will cost Gold to decorate your ship which you can farm by going on adventures.

How to Customize your Ship in Sea of Thieves

    1. Travel to any of the outposts.
    2. Discover the location of the shipwright, who can be found on the main pier of the outpost.
    3. When you are prompted to start a chat with the merchant, press the X button.
    4. To begin browsing the vendor’s inventory, press the A button.
    5. Pressing the A button while hovering over an item will start the buying process.

Where is the ship customization chest in Sea of thieves?

The Ship Customization Chest is a fixed item that may be found next to the Shipwright Shop in Outposts or at the dock in The Reaper’s Hideout. Both locations can be accessed via the Shipwright Shop. This chest gives players the ability to browse and change the visual cosmetics that are equipped to their Ships.

One of the coolest parts about the new update is the cosmetic damage to your ship will persist. This will remain even as you change sessions meaning that your ship will constantly carry a lived in, battle-worn appearance. You can clean it up by going to the Adventure screen in the Main Menu and choosing Restore to fix it back to its default state.

Besides the cosmetics, you can also name your own personal ship now. You should think long and hard before you make a final decision because it costs Ancient Coins to rename your sea vessel.
