If you’re looking for how to name your ship in Sea of Thieves, you’ve come to the right place. The Captaincy update lets players feel a personal connection with their very own sea vessel by giving it a name. This guide will teach you how to name and rename your Sea of Thieves ship.

How to Name Your Ship in Sea of Thieves?

To name your ship in Sea of Thieves, you first have to buy a ship in the game. Before the purchase is transacted, you’ll be presented with the option to name it anything you’d like. There are a few rules that you need to keep in mind:

    • No profanity
    • Can’t contain any numbers
    • Cannot begin or end with space
    • Cannot use specific special characters and symbols
    • Name must not be longer than 20 characters

Once you’ve named your Sea of Thieves ship, the game will approve of it if you followed the rules above. After approval, you’ll purchase the ship with the name you’ve provided. Other players who enters your ship will be able to see the name you’ve given it because it’s right above the captain’s quarters.

Duplicate names are allowed in Sea of Thieves. Your ship’s name need not be wholly unique. Due to the restriction of using numbers, this would have made it difficult for players to name their ship something if the name has already been taken. Thankfully you don’t need to worry about that.

How to Rename Your Ship in Sea of Thieves?

To rename your ship in Sea of Thieves you need to purchase a Renaming Deed. This is a premium item that can be bought from the Pirate Emporium store. It cost about 499 Ancient Coins.

This will cost about $5.99 USD just to rename your ship in Sea of Thieves. It can be costly which is why we mentioned that you should take your time to decide your ship name because renaming isn’t cheap in the long run unless you’ve got real life cash to spare.

You can earn Ancient Coins, but only through the slow and repetitive fighting against Ancient Skeletons. An enemy type that is also rare and difficult to find. There is no other way unless you’re willing to pay money. Thankfully, customizing your ship offers more ways to pay with in-game currency.
