The Something New hand cannon returns for this year’s Solstice of Heroes 2023. The Stasis 120 hand cannon had a lukewarm reception but this year’s version of the weapon has some pretty interesting rolls that can make the Bonfire Bash grind worth it. At least for this gun.
When the Something New was introduced last year, it was in a terrible state. The perks on this weapon didn’t seem appealing. You either had to have a perfect aim or be willing to train yourself to perfect aim to get any sort of value out of the hand cannon. It also has some of the slowest reload times on a 120. Thankfully, this year’s version is more approachable.
How to Get Something New in Destiny 2?
The only way to get the Something New is to take part in the Bonfire Bash activity. It is a chance drop at the end of the activity alongside the Crowning Duolugue and the Compass Rose. From our experience from the event so far, Something New is the more likely weapon to drop while Compass Rose is the rarest among the three.
To get the most out of the activity, Guardians should always aim to gather 30 ignition orbs as quickly as possible to force the boss encounter early, and to ensure the best rewards at the end of the activity.
Best Something New PvP God Rolls
- 1st Column: Smallbore
- 2nd Column: Ricochet Rounds
- Range Masterwork
- Quick Access Sling
- Rapid Hit + Kill Clip (Easily the best PvP combination for this weapon. Kill Clip increases damage and range while active and Rapid Hit helps you reload faster after getting those three taps.)
- Rapid Hit + Encore (Another Rapid Hit roll that performs better in the 6v6 playlist. This is the snowball combination that has the potential for some serious damage. This is somewhat better in some ways since you don’t have to reload to activate the perk. Just kills will do. And there’s plenty to be had in a mode like Control.)
PvP Tips
Something New has certainly gotten better since last year. There are options to choose from now. If you can get a roll with Kill Clip on it, then you’re all set. Rapid Hit is one is the best third column perks since the gun reloads so slowly. There are ways to play around a slow reloading weapon but that’ll restrict what you can and cannot do in most situations.
The Dream Work Origin Trait can actually mess your rhythm up. When it activates, your magazine with will almost always overflow with bullets. This is usually a good thing. But you want to reload to get Kill Clip working. If you’re running this in PvP, don’t use Backup Mag Mod. It’ll overflow your magazine even more.
Something New does not compete with some of the best 120 hand cannons in PvP. It comes close to it when Kill Clip is active but it’s not enough to secure a two-tap on high resilience Guardians. What the perk does for you then is increase your range and make it easier to three taps Guardians.
Best Something New PvE God Rolls
- 1st Column: Fluted Barrel
- 2nd Column: Appended Mag
- Handling Masterwork
- Backup Mag Mod
- Rapid Hit + Frenzy (This combination requires you to be in combat for an extended period of time. Good for timed encounters with no spawn limit. Frenzy buffs everything the gun is sorely lacking for as long as you are fighting something. Rapid Hit as the cherry on top.)
- Subsistence + Headstone (Headstone is pretty standard for must Stasis weapons. When paired up with Subsistence, you have a weapon that can create Stasis crystals with precision final blows that don’t need to reload all that often.)
- Wellspring + Demolitionist (This combination doesn’t benefit the weapon all that much. It is meant for mostly grenade builds. There is some slight overlap between Wellspring and Demolitionist wherein kills grant even more energy.)
PvE Tips
Hand cannons are getting buffed in PvE next season. This is probably the best reason to keep a PvE roll in your vault at the moment. When the buff goes live, hand cannons will deal 75% more damage to Majors. This is potentially huge.
We don’t know yet if the upcoming buffs will have that great of an effect on Something New. It’s still a hassle to reload. Having a Rapid Hit roll can solve most problems then and there. We’ll have to see and see if the PvE god roll for Something New is deserving of a spot in your vault. You can always trash it if fails to live up to expectations.
How Good is Something New?
The Something New hand cannon is proof that something bad can be good after enough time has passed. If we’re judging the weapon purely on stats alone then it’s not all that impressive. It’s not a stat monster in any category and the reload speed can’t possibly go any lower. But it somehow feels better to wield than most other Aggressive Frame hand cannon in the game. Aiming and shooting feel snappy. There’s no other way to describe it. Try it out for yourself and see if it works for you.
These are the Something New Base Stats before any perks are applied:
- Impact: 92
- Range: 58
- Stability: 27
- Handling: 24
- Reload Speed: 25
- Zoom: 14
- Rounds Per Minute: 120
- Magazine: 8
The new perk pool addressed many of the issues players had with the gun when it first came out. We don’t know how Discord managed to slip past but we’re thankful nonetheless. Discord is a fun perk. Even if we don’t like it on primary weapons.
3rd Column Perks
- Feeding Frenzy
- Wellspring
- Triple Tap
- Discord
- Rapid Hit
- Subsistence
- Pugilist
4th Column Perks
- Headstone
- Demolitionist
- Harmony
- Kill Clip
- Frenzy
- Golden Tricorn
- Encore
Out of all the weapons in Solstice of Heroes, only the Something New is worth chasing god rolls over. And it’s not even close. Crowning Duologue has turned out to be a disappointment. And we don’t get Compass Rose often enough to call its god roll grind worth it. There’s still plenty of time for the Solstice event to get rolls for all the weapons. There’s got to be some diamonds in the rough in there, somewhere.
That’s all for this Something New god roll guide for Solstice 2023. Good luck and have fun out there, Guardians.
