    Dredge Walkthrough Chapter 2: Hermitage

Hermitage is the second chapter or pursuit in Dredge. After finding the first relic from a nearby shipwreck, The Collector then points the Fisherman to head to the Gale Cliffs, where the next relic was lost. Read ahead as we go through the events of Chapter 2: Hermitage of Dredge and share some tips and tricks on how to complete the chapter.

See previous: Chapter 1 – Grotesque Fish

After giving The Collector the Ornate Key, he tells you to go to Gale Cliffs, where you can find the next relic. The Gale Cliffs can be found in the southeast region. It’s recommended to at least have a few engine upgrades before leaving The Marrows, and try to wake up early so that you can make it to Gale Cliffs under sunlight. There’s also a sea monster patrolling the maze of cliffs, and it helps to have enough speed to outsail it.

    Dusty Pontoon

Dusty Pontoon - Dredge Chapter 2 Hermitage Walkthrough

The Dusty Pontoon is your one-stop shop for your fishing needs for the rest of the regions in Dredge. It is operated by the Traveling Merchant who offers the same services that the Fishmonger and the Shipwright have, plus she can also let you access your storage. It’s best to check her store often, as you will sometimes find a Research Party for sale.

Once you reach the cliffs, head to the Dusty Pontoon for now to take a quick breather, then go to the Ruins where you can see the red beam of light pointing to the location of the next relic.

    Hermit

Hermit - Dredge Chapter 2 Hermitage Walkthrough

There is debris blocking your passage to get the relic, but before leaving, go to the dock and talk to the Hermit. Despite the danger of crumbling rocks, the Hermit refuses to head to the nearby town because he had a falling out with his brother. He’s also looking for a particular family crest, which he marks on your map.

Once you go to the site, your path will be blocked by more rocks, so you’ll have to find a way to go around and find another path to take.

Cyclops Serpent Sea Monster - Dredge Chapter 2 Hermitage Walkthrough

It’s at this point that you may encounter the Cyclops Serpent or the sea monster that patrols the area. Once it spots you, it will continuously chase you down until you get back to the safe area.

If you do happen to encounter the cyclops, try to lure it away from where the crest is by making detours around the cliffs and strategically using Haste. This should give you time to dredge out the crest from the marked area safely.

Once you have the crest, go back to the Hermit and show it to him. He will ask you to talk to his brother in the town of Ingfell.

    Retired Whaler

Retired Whaler - Dredge Chapter 2 Hermitage Walkthrough

Go to Ingfell and talk to the Retired Whaler. He will notice the family crest that you have and decide to forgive his brother. He then offers his help by giving you Packed Explosives that you can use to clear away the debris. He then tells you to use it on the same marked spot from earlier to clear up the path.

Once done, report back to the Retired Whaler, then go to the Hermit to tell him that his brother forgives him. Checking back at the Retired Whaler, he will start selling Packed Explosives as a way of saying thanks. Purchase as many as you can, as there are plenty of spots within the cliffs that you can unlock, including the path to the shipwreck.

    Relic #2 – Music Box

Relic #2 - Music Box - Dredge Chapter 2 Hermitage Walkthrough

Blow up the debris near the shipwreck, then dredge the relic out of the water. You’ll then obtain the Music Box. Travel back to The Collector to hand him over the relic and gain another powerful ability.

    Manifest Ability

Manifest Ability - Dredge Chapter 2 Hermitage Walkthrough

Manifest is an ability that allows you to instantly travel back to the Blackstone Isle wherever you are on the map, making it a good skill to use for emergencies or just to make a quick delivery of the next relic. It has a long cooldown, which can be sped up if you rest at a dock.

The next relic can be found somewhere in the Stellar Basin, which is just west of where you are, but before heading over there, take the time to farm some more money for some upgrades and some new fishing gear that’s apt for the job.

  • Dredge Walkthrough Chapter 1: Grotesque Fish

Dredge Walkthrough Chapter 1: Grotesque Fish

Grotesque Fish is the First Chapter or Main Pursuit in Dredge. The Fisherman hauls in what appears to be an abnormal fish. Thinking that it could still be sold for something, he brings it over to the Fishmonger for inspection. Read ahead as we go through the events of Chapter 1: Grotesque Fish of Dredge and share some tips and tricks on how to complete the chapter.

See previous: Prologue – A Fresh Start

After handing the aberration over to the Fishmonger, he dissects it and reveals that there’s a handkerchief inside the fish’s body. He hands you the handkerchief, which serves as one of the key items in the main story.

Later on, a mysterious man peers inside your vessel and asks you to meet him at Blackstone Isle, southeast of the Greater Marrows.

    The Collector

The Collector - Dredge Chapter 1 Grotesque Fish Walkthrough

Head and dock over at Blackstone Isle, and you’ll meet the mysterious man who introduces himself as The Collector. He is looking for relics, such as the handkerchief that you obtained, and he offers his dredger for your boat in exchange for your help in finding the other missing relics. There are five more to collect: a ring, a necklace, a watch, a music box, and a key.

    How to dredge

How to dredge - Dredge Chapter 1 Grotesque Fish Walkthrough

Now that you have the dredger, you can now dredge for items that have sunken into the water. Look for debris in the water, then tap on the dredge button to start dredging.

You’ll then start the dredging minigame. In this minigame, there will be two rotating rings with gaps between them. You’ll be controlling an arrow jumping between these rings as you try to avoid hitting the gaps until you manage to haul the item all the way up to the ship.

Using the dredge, you can now also collect building materials that will be needed in ship upgrades as well as in some side pursuits.

    Relic #1 – Ornate Key

Relic #1 - Ornate Key - Dredge Chapter 1 Grotesque Fish Walkthrough

At this point in the game, you are actually free to travel to other regions of the world and get their respective relics. However, due to the scaling difficulty per region and the unsuitability of your ship for their weather and danger conditions, it is advisable to prioritize finding the first relic, the Ornate Key, located near The Marrows.

According to The Collector, you should start looking for relics in shipwrecks. You can head over to the Lighthouse Keeper, and she will tell you about the shipwreck behind the Greater Marrow island.

Go to the shipwreck marked on the map (you can also follow the pillar of red light) and start dredging to obtain the Ornate Key. Bring this back to The Collector, and he will reward you with a special ability: Haste.

    Haste Ability

Haste Ability - Dredge Chapter 1 Grotesque Fish Walkthrough

The haste ability allows your boat to sail faster for a certain amount of time before your engine overheats. This is a good ability to pop in case you find yourself getting chased by the monstrosities of the sea. Keep an eye out on the engine meter and don’t let it go full; otherwise, your engine will stall and cause damage to a part of your ship. Additionally, using this ability also raises the panic meter.

Dredge Prologue: A Fresh Start Walkthrough

Dredge is a fishing game entwined with some Eldritch horrors where an unassuming fisherman hauls in cursed-looking creatures and eventually gets involved in uncovering a very dark, world-ending secret. Read ahead as we go through the events of Prologue: A Fresh Start of Dredge and share some tips and tricks on how to complete the chapter.

Introductory Cutscene - Dredge Prologue A Fresh Start Walkthrough

The game starts off with the cutscene of the main protagonist, the Fisherman, as he sails his boat through the seas on his way to his new job. His trip is cut short when he sails into thick fog and crashes into something.

The Mayor - Dredge Prologue A Fresh Start Walkthrough

You then switch to the Fisherman’s point of view as you wake up in Greater Marrow and greeted by the town’s mayor. He welcomes you to the town as you somehow miraculously crashed into the same place you were headed. He reports that your ship took a beating and that it’s beyond repair, so they’re lending you a replacement boat. He also tells you that you’re good to start on your work, but he also warns you to try and not stay up too late and get engulfed by the thick fog.

Select ‘Undock’ from the Docks to start sailing out to sea. At this point, you’ll be seeing some prompts that will serve as your tutorial along the way, such as the controls and how fishing works.

    How to fish

How to Fish - Dredge Prologue A Fresh Start Walkthrough

While out on the sea, you’ll see some ripples and silhouettes of fish in certain spots. You can use your Spyglass to get a better look at these ripples to get an idea of what kind of fish are present in the spot, or you can also just sail towards it.

There are things to consider whether you can catch the fish or not, and it’s with your catching equipment’s type. You’ll start off with a Basic Fishing Pole which can only catch Coastal type fish. Later on in the game, you’ll get more advanced fishing gear that can catch a wide variety of fish, but for now, go for the ones that you can catch.

Once you find a suitable spot, you can then start fishing. The fishing minigame that you’ll get will depend on the species of fish you’re trying to catch. The common thing with these minigames is that they’re all timing-based, where you hit the fish button once the pointer or marker is within the designated target. Doing so will make the fish get closer to the boat, as shown by the fishing line on the left side.

Oftentimes, the targets of the minigames are green, but there are times that a gold target appears. Hitting this will immediately reel in the fish, and the fish you catch will be its biggest size. It’s not necessary to hit all greens, and you can skip some, especially if you spot a gold target.

Fishing in the same spot is possible until it becomes depleted. Fishing spots usually get refreshed after an in-game day.

    Inventory Management

Inventory Management - Dredge Prologue A Fresh Start Walkthrough

The next part of fishing is actually storing your catch inside your boat. Each fish occupies certain amounts and patterns of squares, and it’s up to you to manually place them in to make sure that you are using your cargo hold’s space efficiently. Once you catch a fish that cannot be placed in the cargo hold, there is a temporary box that you can use while you try to arrange and make space for it. Otherwise, you will either have to throw away some invaluable catch to save the valuable ones or just chuck the new catch back at sea.

Once you get back to town after fishing, the mayor will tell you that you have to pay for the ship as the town is loaning it to you instead. To help with paying this loan, part of your sales will be taken out to pay off your loan. He points you to the local Fishmonger, where you can take your catches and appraise them for money.

    Fishmonger

Fishmonger - Dredge Prologue A Fresh Start Walkthrough

The Fishmonger is who you can sell your catches to, including any valuable treasures that you obtain. He will be your buyer for Great Marrow, while you will meet someone else in the other regions of the game.

After selling all of your catch, you’ll be met by the Mayor again who gives you a Research Part. These are valuable items that you can use to unlock upgrades that can be fitted on your ship, so try to make sure to get these as soon as you see them.

    Shipwright

Shipwright - Dredge Prologue A Fresh Start Walkthrough

The Shipwright is who you can turn to for ship modifications and upgrades. She can sell you new parts, install them, and also repair your ship in case it gets damaged.

From this point on, you’ll see icons on certain squares inside your ship’s cargo hold. These icons indicate the locations where you can install certain parts to make them operable; if fishing equipment is simply placed inside the hold on random squares, they’re not considered to be installed.

Take some time to look into the Research section to see the parts that you can unlock using the Research Parts. You’ll get an idea of which upgrades to go for and how many parts you will need to collect to unlock them. Once you do unlock them, they will be available for purchase from the Shipwright.

    Lighthouse Keeper

The Lighthouse Keeper is one of the villagers living in Greater Marrow. She talks as if she recognizes you and questions why you came back to the islands. She will be a crucial part of the story later on, but for now, you can simply check if she has something for you from time to time.

    Panic Mechanic

Once you start fishing during nighttime, you’ll notice that the eye on the top part of the screen opens up and moves more frantically the later you stay into the night. The eye shows your panic level, and the higher it goes, the more dangers you’ll encounter. Having a max panic while at sea has the possibility of summoning the different sea monsters.

Panic can be managed by making sure that you have illumination, and it resets after taking a rest at a dock.

    Side Pursuits

As you work on your loan payment, you can take on some of the Side Pursuits or side quests available at this point:

    • Caught to Order – Talk to the Fishmonger
    • Packaged Deliver – Talk to the Mayor and deliver a package to Little Marrow

Doing these side quests will help in getting a bit more lore as to what’s happening in the islands, as well as some cash to help you get upgrades sooner. These side quests can also reward books that you can read in the background to earn some unique bonuses for your fishing skills.

Side Pursuits - Dredge Prologue A Fresh Start Walkthrough

During your fishing expeditions, you will eventually catch your first aberration, which will trigger the next main quest. Moving forward, you’ll see some fishing spots that have swirling blue and green lights, which usually signifies that there is an aberration to be caught in the spot.

  • Dredge Best Before Pursuit: Where to catch a Conger Eel

Dredge Best Before Pursuit: Where to catch a Conger Eel

Best Before is one of the various side pursuits in Dredge where players will be tasked with getting a fish that is part of a delicacy in Gale Cliffs. However, this fish can only be found in a certain area, and it has to be prepared a certain way.

Read ahead as we go through the steps on how to complete the Best Before pursuit in Dredge.

Step 1: Go to Ingfell and talk to the Ingfell Resident

Make your way to Ingfell and talk to the Ingfell resident, who will ask for your help in catching a Conger Eel for a delicacy that she wants.

Step 2: Catch the Conger Eel

Conger eels can only be caught in the southwest channel of O3 using a shallow rod at night. This location is dangerous because of the Serpent that patrols the area. It’s best to get the Banish ability first so that you can thwart off the Serpent and fish in peace.

You will need to have progressed enough through the Hermitage pursuit to be able to get hold of explosives and reach the area.

Dredge Best Before Pursuit - Where to catch a Conger Eel

Step 3: Let the Conger Eel get into rotting state

Make your way back to Ingfell, and before giving it to the resident, you will have to let the eel go into its rotting state. This can be done by keeping the eel in your boat for roughly just less than a full day. You can speed up time by resting at the dock. Make sure to keep an eye out and don’t let it go to rot completely. Hand it over to the resident once it starts rotting. You will be rewarded with $150 for completing the pursuit.

  • Dredge Flames of the Deep Pursuit Guide

Dredge Flames of the Deep Pursuit Guide

Flames of the Deep is one of the main pursuits in Dredge. In this pursuit, players are tasked with collecting the final relic, which is at Devil’s Spine, the region where the ancient civilization once lived.

Read ahead as we go through the steps on how to complete the Flames of the Deep pursuit in Dredge.

Step 1: Travel to the Ancient Temple - Dredge Flames of the Deep Pursuit

Step 1: Travel to the Ancient Temple

After delivering the fourth relic to The Collector, make your way to the island in the middle of Devil’s Spine where the Ancient Temple is. There, you will meet an NPC known as the Fanatic. He will give you the quest to fetch the Fathomless Flames by completing the rock slab puzzles in the area.

Step 2: Complete the Rock Slabs

Before heading to the rock slabs, it’s best to stop by the Charred Pontoon and grab some explosives, as you’ll need a couple of them to clear your way to the Rock Slabs.

The Rock Slabs can be found in P12, P14, and O14. Each of these rock slabs requires specific fishes in order to be solved:

Rock Slab Location P12 - Dredge Flames of the Deep Pursuit
    • P12 – It requires a Spider Crab and a Squat Lobster, both of which can be caught using regular crab pots (at least 3×3) within the Devil’s Spine.
Rock Slab Location P14 - Dredge Flames of the Deep Pursuit
    • P14 – It requires a Pale Skate (Volcanic, Day) and a Ghost Shark (Abyssal, any time). The Pale Skates can be found near the Ancient Temple, while the Ghost Sharks are often found near the east-northeastern side of the region.
Rock Slab Location O14 - Dredge Flames of the Deep Pursuit
    • O14 – It requires any two aberrated fishes. You can easily get some by using the Atrophy ability on any fishing spot or a baited fishing spot as the ability raises the chances of catching aberrations.

Each sock slab solved will give you a Fathomless Flame plus a few more treasures and resources.

Step 3: Bring the Fathomless Flames to the Ancient Temple - Dredge Flames of the Deep Pursuit

Step 3: Bring the Fathomless Flames to the Ancient Temple

Once you have the flames, you can then go to the Ancient Temple and place each flame on each of the statues. Then, talk to the Fanatic, and he will do a ritual which will cause him to burn up. From his ashes, you can then get the Antique Pocket Watch, which is the final relic needed by The Collector.

Before surrendering the final relic, consider paying the Old Mayor a visit at the dock in P10 to get a chance to do the good ending.

  • Dredge Ancient Lighthouse

    Dredge Ancient Lighthouse

The Ancient Lighthouse is a location that contains one of the pursuit quests in Dredge. It was built by the ancient civilization not only to guide their seafarers but also to appease the Leviathan and let it know that the people had not forgotten about preventing the destruction of the world.

Read ahead as we talk about the Ancient Lighthouse, where to find it, and what its purpose is in Dredge.

    Ancient Lighthouse Location

The Ancient Lighthouse can be found in O15 on top of the Ancient Ruins. It’s better to sail around the islands instead of going through the ruins where the paths are narrow and there are aggressive fishes all around.

Inside the Ancient Lighthouse - Dredge

    Inside the Ancient Lighthouse

The Ancient Lighthouse is a place that is involved with the Stone Tablets pursuit. Once you have all the small stone tablets fished out from the dredging spots in Devil’s Spine, plus the one from the Trader at Little Marrow, the tablets will fuse into one huge tablet. This can then be slotted into the hole in the lighthouse which will then reveal treasures. This is where the Flame of the Sky, the brightest lamp in the game, can be found.

    Ancient Lighthouse Lore - Dredge

    Ancient Lighthouse Lore

Only a little is known about the Ancient Lighthouse, but there are some scriptures revealed by the obelisk at N15 that tell about the other important use of the lighthouse back then:

"A leviathan raises its vast grey head, stretching up, up until it sits level with a bright flame cradled at the top of the ancient lighthouse.

It watches the fire for a while, tilting its head and calling softly to it with a guttural song.

Appearing satisfied, the beast slinks down into the water, gliding back to the depths."

Blue Crabs are sea creatures that can be caught in Dredge that are needed to complete one of the game’s side pursuits. These crabs get their name from their vibrant blue shells and are thriving on the shores of Stellar Basin.

Read ahead as we talk about Blue Crabs, where to catch them, and what they are used for in Dredge.

    Where to catch Blue Crabs

Blue crabs can be caught in the Stellar Basin using any Crab Pot during any time of the day. They can be caught up to the depth of 5.0 meters and occupy a 2×1 space in the pot. • Dredge Mimic Crabs

    Dredge Mimic Crabs

Mimic crabs are one of the dangerous sea monsters in Dredge. These giant crabs use mimicry to bait their unsuspecting prey into coming close enough to their claws’ range. Despite staying still most of the time, they can still pose a threat to the uninitiated.

Read ahead as we talk about the mimic crabs and provide a list of all the locations you could look for them in Dredge.

    Mimic Crab Locations

There are four Dredge Mimic Crabs that can be found in the Distant Shores, which are as follows:

Obelisk Mimic Crab - Dredge Mimic crab location
    • Obelisk Mimic Crab – E2, in Stellar Basin.
Ship Mimic Crab - Dredge Mimic crab location
    • Ship Mimic Crab – P6, the islands north of Gale Cliffs.
Ship Mimic Crab - Dredge Mimic crab location 2
    • Ship Mimic Crab – H13, the islands east of Twisted Strand.
Plane Mimic Crab - Dredge Mimic crab location 2
    • Plane Mimic Crab – D10, the island south of Twisted Strand.

These crabs spring up and reveal their true form once you get too close to them. They then start to swing their claws to hit your boat. You can simply sail away to get out of their range, and they should revert to their stationary form. You can use the Banish ability to temporarily prevent them from attacking, but they cannot be killed; they only function as environmental dangers.
