Deep within the echoing chambers of the Tank Hangar, the third area in Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake uncovers more than just the presence of the captured DARPA chief. In our Metal Gear Solid 1 walkthrough, the Tank Hangar section reveals whispers of another prisoner and a mysterious third infiltrator. This walkthrough will help you get through vents, past guards, and how to get the equipment you’ll need.

The starting point of this area will depend on which vent you have chosen to access. Regardless of which, you will still arrive at the center of the hangar where you will need to go to progress. In halfway through both paths, you will receive an incoming Codec call from McDonnel Miller at channel 141.80, Snake’s former survival instructor. He can give some advice that could help out Snake in some tough situations.

Tank Hangar Walkthrough - Metal Gear Solid 1: get through vents

If you have taken the ground floor vent, follow it until you arrive at a fork. To the right side is a dead end which has a Ration if you need one. To the left is where you need to go.

Tank Hangar Walkthrough - Metal Gear Solid 1: get through the underwater area before your breath runs out

Take the left path and quickly get through the underwater area before your breath runs out. Keep following the rats and you will eventually find the exit to the tank hangar. You can then go to the elevator to the northwest, call it, and ride it down, or you can venture up the mezzanine level.

Tank Hangar Walkthrough - Metal Gear Solid 1: overhear the conversation of two guards

If you have taken the upper vent, simply follow the vent all the way through. You will pass by a ceiling grate where you can overhear the conversation of two guards about where the DARPA chief is being held, another woman that they captured, and an infiltrator they have detected other than Snake. Eventually, you will see an open vent for your exit, but if you need some, there’s a Ration at the very end of the shaft.

Tank Hangar Walkthrough - Metal Gear Solid 1: Chaff Grenades

You’ll arrive at the same center of the hangar after taking the exit. Take the left path to find some more Chaff Grenades, then head right and avoid getting caught by the surveillance cam.

Tank Hangar Walkthrough - Metal Gear Solid 1: Thermal Goggle

Make your way down the catwalk and you will find a room to the east with another camera guarding the Thermal Goggle which will be useful later on.

Walk down to the west of the catwalk all the way until you reach the stairs leading down that is being guarded by another camera.

Tank Hangar Walkthrough - Metal Gear Solid 1: go to basement 1

Go downstairs and avoid the patrolling guards. Approach the keypad for the elevator and interact with it to call the elevator up; the elevator will take a short time to get up, so stay alert in the meantime and avoid detection. Once the doors are open, ride the elevator and push the button to go to basement 1 or B1.
