Blizzard has experienced a problem regarding an Overwatch DDoS attack which caused several major issues. Several Blizzard games present on the Battle.net launcher has also experienced problems regarding online connectivity. See the full details below.
Overwatch DDoS Attack Causes Major Issues
On December 14, 2021 Blizzard suffered a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack which was confirmed to be the cause of several bugs and server issues. At around 9:45 PM CT players all around have reported being kicked out of games which unfortunately resulted in several penalties, which many fans have complained on the Overwatch forums.
Due to this, official tech support for Overwatch have warned players not to enter any competitive matches until the issue is fixed.
At the time, the cause of these issues seem to center only on Overwatch. Nobody knew why this was happening. Nobody, at least until the official tech support for Overwatch posted on the forums confirming the DDoS attack on 10:37 PM CT on the same day.
Players have then begun reporting login issues with other games such as World of Warcraft and Hearthstone. On 10:54 PM CT, the Battle.net launcher has issued a warning for players seeking to play regarding the DDoS attack and high latency.
The timing couldn’t be any more worse for Overwatch as the Winter Wonderland event was actually scheduled to be going online that very day. It’s possible that due to this DDoS attack, the event was instead pushed two days later past its expected release date to December 16, 2021.
It’s unfortunate that players have to suffer through such issues in Overwatch in time for the holidays. Thankfully it all seems to be okay now. Still, you didn’t suffer any penalties from leaving matches due to circumstances that aren’t your fault.
