Top 10 Upcoming Metroidvania Games 2022 and Beyond

There is no shortage of great upcoming Metroidnavia games 2022 and beyond. We can only have so many on our list. So, we decided to choose some of the more unique titles that might go well with our most anticipated games. It’s a good mix, is what we’re saying.

Anyways, here’s our list of highly anticipated Metroidvania games for 2022 and beyond.

Why are these games called Metroidvanias?

The term Metroidvania is used to describe games that are of similar design to Metroid and Castlevania, two games that defined the action-adventure subgenre since their release back on the NES. In terms of game design, any game that borrows elements from both games, such as the use of items/skills to open different parts of the map, can call itself a Metroidvania.

List of Upcoming Metroidvania Games 2022 and Beyond

Doomblade

Tentative Release Date: TBA
Genre: Action, Metroidvania
Platform: PC

There’s nothing like a shared sense of vengeance. In Doomblade, players are the host to a “Cursed” blade where both entities strive to get payback on the ones responsible for both of your miseries. Be careful of what you wish for, however. Cause it seems like your “friend” has plans to go above and beyond your initial deal. But that’s a problem that’ll sort itself out when the time is right.

Gold Project

Tentative Release Date: December 2023
Genre: Karma-based Metroidvania
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

Gold Project is an interesting title wherein your character decides to either side with the blessed Light… or greed-filled Gold. Your choices change elements on the map and your interactions with the world.

The game’s simplistic art style goes along great with the game’s focus on harnessing power and its purpose. The game itself is still very much in the development stages. And we’ll have to see how the game will ultimately shape up after raising more than €150,000 on Kickstarter.

Rebel Transmute

Tentative Release Date: 2022
Genre: Action, Metroidvania
Platform: PC

At first glance, Rebel Transmute looks like a straight-up modded version of Metroid. There are literal Metroids in the game! But that shouldn’t take away anything from the game itself. From what we can tell, the game is going to be a narrative-driven experience that leans heavily on its hand-drawn pixel-art style and the many ways the player can get around the map. We’re confident that the game will release this year as indicated by all the recent announcements the dev has posted on Steam.

The Last Faith

Tentative Release Date: 2022
Genre: Action, Metroidvania, Souls like
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

A gorgeous pixel-art souls-like Metroidvania, The Last Faith impresses with the huge range of custom executions the player can perform on enemies. The fact that it is described as both a Metroidvania and a Soulslike should tell you everything else you need to know about this game.

And yes, we are fully expecting to die… a lot… in this game. But at least we’ll be treated to some awesome pixel-art animations.

Frontier Hunter Erza’s Wheel of Fortune

Genre: Metroidvania, Action, Adventure
Platform: PC

We are entering the realm of 2.5D with this entry. Frontier Hunter Erza’s Wheel of Fortune promises to be an action-pack title that utilizes a wide range of animations in and outside of combat. The game also has elements of exploration and hidden storylines. What’s most interesting to us is the fact that there’s going a support system wherein Erza’s friends swap in to deal some damage themselves. We can’t wait to learn more about this game.

A Sister’s Journey

Tentative Release Date: 2022
Genre: Metroidvania, Action, Adventure
Platform: PC

A Sister’s Journey looks like Celeste in many ways. Right down to its platforming sections. Except, you know, Celeste didn’t carry around a huge plasma rifle. But in A Sister’s Journey, you’re going to need that rifle to blast your way through stone walls and the occasional group of enemies. There are plenty of enemies that want you dead.

If you’re looking for a more combat-centric precision platformer, you may want to give A Sister’s Journey a look-see.

The Knight Witch

Tentative Release Date: 2022
Genre: Shoot ‘Em Up, Metroidvania
Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC

The Knight Witch is more than just shoot ’em up Metroidvania. It is also a deck-building game with its own morality system. We don’t know how all these elements are going to go together in a meaningful way but we take comfort in the fact that we will be zooming across the map, unimpeded by trivial things like gravity. This game is coming from an established publisher, so we can expect a level of quality befitting it.

Last Vanguard

Tentative Release Date: TBA
Genre: Metroidvania
Platform: PC

Last Vanguard is one of the most visually unique titles on our list. In a sea of 3D models and pixel art characters, the game stands out with its cartoon art style. It reminded us of Samurai Jack in many ways, if Jack and everything else in the world turned chibi. (Might be the reason why it made it so high on our list.)

We are looking forward to customizing our playstyle depending on our loadout. Might even put our skills to the test against the game’s 15 planned bosses.

9 Years of Shadows

Tentative Release Date: Q4 2022
Genre: Action, Metroidvania
Platform: PC, Switch

On any other list, 9 Years of Shadows would be an undisputed top pick. Well, not on our current list. Maybe if it was just for 2022 games, for sure.

There are plenty of reasons to like this game: the art style is gorgeous, combat is fast and deadly, there are multiple elemental-themed armors to choose from to solve puzzles with, AND a teddy bear ghost thing serves as your guide. Need we say more?

Hollow Knight Silksong

Tentative Release Date: 2023
Genre: Metroidvania, Action, Adventure
Platform: PC, Switch

And here we are, the number one spot. When Hollow Knight Silksong was announced all the way back in 2019, we were all expecting it to be released sometime in 2020. That obviously did not happen. But that didn’t stop the fans from waiting patiently through every Nintendo Indie World announcement to get more news on Silksong. Their patience has been rewarded though as the game is set to release next year!

Now, the game has some incredibly big shoes to fill. That’s to be expected from the sequel to Hollow Knight. But we believe wholeheartedly in Team Cherry. The small team has proven that they have what it takes to stand shoulder to shoulder with other great studios… if given enough time.

We probably don’t need to say anything more on the game, it practically speaks for itself. Feel free to watch the trailer though.
