2022 is shaping up to be a very impressive year of Souls like games. We need only look at Elden Ring to see the current state of Soulslike right now. The rise in popularity for the genre cannot be understated, and hopefully, these upcoming Souls Like games for 2022 and beyond live up to expectations and maintain the positive momentum we have right now.
List of Upcoming souls like games 2022 and beyond
Perennial Order
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Genre: Souls like, 2D Action, RPG
Platform: PC
Perennial Order is described as a 2D plant horror boss rush, set in an atmospheric Dark Age world plagued with nature-infested horrors. The most important to focus on is the fact that this is going to be a boss rush game, which potentially means there will be less of that world-building we’ve come to love about Souls like games. On the bright side, this will leave plenty of time for the developers to craft some killer boss fights. I wish we knew more about this game but as it is, it’s worth noting at least for now.
Project Lilith
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Genre: Souls like, Action, RPG
Platform: PC
Project Lilith looks and feels like a classic Souls game, except for the fact that your movements are more fluid than your average clunky Souls like. And that is why it is on this list. That, and the armor design is kinda badass. You can’t argue against anything that looks like a Death Knight… unless you’re a Death Knight yourself.
And just like all the others in the lower part of this list, the game doesn’t have a tentative release date… So, as much as I want to get excited about it, there’s no guarantee it’ll be out anytime soon.
Project Relic
Tentative Release Date: 2023
Genre: Souls like, Action, RPG
Platform: PlayStation, Xbox, PC
One look at Project Relic and you can see why this game is worth the hype. The visuals are quite impressive and the action (from initial trailers) gives the impression that the combat is going to be seamless. The only reason why this game isn’t higher on the list is that this game’s been in development for a while now. And though it is slated for a 2023 release, there’s no guarantee until a solid release date is given out.
Project EVE
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Genre: Action, Souls like, RPG
Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Whenever anyone brings up Project EVE, you can’t help but compare it with another stylish hack-and-game, Bayonetta. As upcoming souls like games go, this has me fired up every time I watch that trailer. But with that being said, it would be wise of me to keep expectations in check. I’ve been burned before with flashy combat and over-the-top action set pieces that didn’t offer much beyond the initial “WOW” moment. And it’s such a bummer to say that too after seeing this game’s take on Witch Time and the encounter in the tunnel. But until we know more about this game, it’s better to keep an eye out for reviews and impressions.
The Last Hero of Nostalgia
Tentative Release Date: 2022
Genre: Souls like,Action, RPG
Platform: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Only announced not too long ago, I was not expecting such a comedic, satirical title would strike my fancy the way it did. But here we are. Judging from the trailer, we are going to get much of that souls like combat. But what I’m wondering is if they’ll keep any of that wit and sarcasm in the game like what we’ve seen in the trailer. Souls-like games aren’t known for their direct storytelling, after all.
If the developers do keep it, then this title deserves to have more attention.
Alterborn
Tentative Release Date: Q3 2023
Genre: Shooter, Roguelike, RPG
Platform: PS5, PC
We don’t really know much about Alterborn, other than it is going to be a shooter-roguelike-RPG set in the ruins of world overrun by plants. When shooting was brought up, my thought immediately went to Remnant: From the Ashes. If the next trailer showed gameplay, and it was more than just shooting and dodging, then I’m sold. And if the powers system is further expanded upon, even better! So, for now, mild excitement.
Update: a devlog has been released showcasing the features of the game.
Flintlock
Tentative Release Date: 2022
Genre: Souls like, Action RPG
Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
What caught my eye with this particular (or so than the well-crafted trailer) is the fact that we will be journeying around with a furry creature with their personal vendetta against the gods. We don’t what that means quite yet. But if the buddy combat is as good as we’ve seen it in the trailer, then you have my attention. Look, I’m fine if all that little guy does is stun enemies and lock them in place. Makes my job easier.
Hopefully, we get actual gameplay soon. (I’d like to see how that flintlock fares in actual combat.)
The Tarnishing of Juxtia
Tentative Release Date: Summer 2022
Genre: Souls like, Platformer
Platform: PC
The Tarnishing of Juxtia may look like a typical 2D side-scrolling Souls-like, but it is the way the game deals with its stamina and mana regeneration that intrigued me the most about this title. If the player successfully lands consecutive attacks, then that’ll cause both stamina and mana to recharge super quickly. This system encourages a more active playstyle with timely hits and effective dodges. That is a reason to get excited for. But more than that, the game is slated for a release really soon. Figures crossed we get it to play sometime in July or August.
Bleak Faith: Forsaken
Tentative Release Date: Q2 2022
Genre: Hack and Slash Souls like
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Watching Bleak Faith: Forsaken’s official trailer, it reminds me of old-school Dark Souls. If I’m being technical about it, it’s more on relying on your shield and measuring your attacks in timing with your enemy’s actions. With the advent of the more active playstyles like the ones in Bloodbourne and Sekiro, you’ll be forgiven if you think the concept is too dated to anyone outside of Dark Souls veterans. While Bleak Faith: Forsaken doesn’t strike me as something different, sometimes a return to form isn’t so bad every once in a while.
Blackmyth: Wukong
Tentative Release Date: 2023
Genre: Action RPG, Adventure
Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Blackmyth: Wukong looks like one of those “too good to be true” games when you simply watch the trailer. I find it hard to believe that something that looks this good and runs so fluidly can reside in current and previous gen consoles. But I’ve been wrong before and the team behind the game generally comes across as passionate developers. Hey, I’d like nothing more than to be proven wrong. I can accept that while enjoying this potentially good game.
Regardless, the idea of using the shapeshifting ability works both for the original source material, Journey to the West, and from a gameplay standpoint.
Lies of P
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Genre: Souls like, Action, RPG
Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
I am far more interested in the story of Lies of P than the potential gameplay. From all the upcoming souls like games on this list, I’d say I’m far more interested in the story aspect of this game rather than the gameplay. Which isn’t to say there’s anything wrong weapon-making system in a Souls like. I just like the idea of multiple endings and the fact that you unlock different endings depending on the liars your character says.
Now, if “I’ve Got No Strings” starts playing in the background. Maybe I should be looking over my shoulder in case an Iron Man inspired piece of armor starts charging at me.
Thymesia
Release Date: August 9th, 2022
Genre: Souls like, Action RPG
Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
And here we are, the top 5. And we are starting it off with Thymesia.
For me, Thymesia close resembles Bloodborne, if Bloodborne was more over-the-top than it already is. The pace is quicker and the enemies do appear to have more tricks up their sleeve than your garden variety Hunter. The biggest difference I see is that Thymesia mixes in a skill-based “blood letting” feature that fills up your energy meter if you have your timings right. Add in the level of customization you get from all the powers you’ve claimed from bosses and you have a game that’s just right for your unique playstyle.
Look forward to it when it comes out on August 9th, 2022.
Soulstice
Tentative Release Date: Fall 2022
Genre: Souls like, Action RPG
Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Just recently, the developer released a series of videos showcasing the combat of the game. And I love every minute of it. The two sisters, Briar and Lute, serve unique functions on the battlefield. Briar takes down enemies with her mastery of weapons and Lute reveals the aura of a particularly nasty enemy. It is by harmonizing both styles that players will actually progress in the game.
Really looking forward to this game when it comes out later this Fall.
Steelrising
Release Date: September 8th, 2022
Genre: Action RPG
Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
I have always had a fascination with complex machine designs. Each piece moves in synch at all times, especially when it comes to gears and such. Maybe that’s why I find this game so fascinating? Or maybe it’s the robot aesthetic? Can’t really place it down. What I do like, however, is how this game is shaping to be as an Action RPG. But then again looking at the publisher… well.. it doesn’t spark much confidence. I’m willing to give this game a fair shake though and hopefully, it won’t take us 2 years to have a finished game. Oh, and if you’re a Souls-equivalent, it’s got to be Sekiro. At least in terms of grappling hook arms.
I remain mildly optimistic, even more so now that we slowly inching closer to that September 8th release.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Genre: Metroidvania, Action-Adventure
Platform: Nintendo Switch, PC
I know many fans were disappointed when Hollow Knight Silksong was a no-show in Nintendo’s latest Indie showcase… but we’re only halfway through the year and I refuse to accept the possibility that we won’t be getting updates this year. With that said, I’m in it for the long haul, and whenever Team Cherry decides to drop the news, I will be ready for it.
There wasn’t anything new since the teaser but I feel it is only right for this game to sit as high second place in this list.
Update: Hollow Knight has received a release date. Due to come out next year.
Star Wars Jedi Survivor
Tentative Release Date: 2023
Genre: Souls-like, Action-Adventure, RPG
Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
I gotta honest here. I didn’t expect an announcement of the sequel to Fallen Order to happen anytime this year. I’ve heard the rumors…. and I wasn’t expecting to hear of anything until at least 2023. So, imagine my surprise when Star Wars Jedi Survivor was announced for next year and because of that, takes the number one spot on this list. (I would’ve given it the spot anyways even if the game releases in 2024.)
There is understandable level of expectation now after so many players have seen what a Dark Souls game can be like in the Star Wars Universe. Heck, Fallen Order wrote the damn playbook.
With so much speculation going on right now, I figure every trailer releasing from now is going to be look at from a microscope. Exciting times, we live in.
And that’s our list for the Top 16 Upcoming Souls like Games coming out in 2022 & Beyond. It took quite a bit of effort putting this list together as the number of Soul-likes coming out right now are unbelievable. And that’s to the credit of Fromsoft and their insistence and belief in their unique formula. Here’s to hoping for another great game like Elden Ring. Soon!
